December Updates
Elementary Early Dismissal
Hour of Code
Hour of code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org reaching tens of millions of students with the purpose of introducing computer science and computer programming to all ages. We are excited to announce that our students will participate in this movement and expect that many students will practice coding with some of our "Bots" which were funded by a grant from the Medway Foundation for Education. Officially, Hour of Code is celebrated during the week of Dec 9th - 15th. However, we have extend the time frame so that students will participate in this experience before the holiday break.
School-Wide Assembly
Members of the Medway Middle School Chorus set to Perform at our School-Wide Assembly on Friday, December 20, 2019
On Friday, December 20th, Memorial School will enjoy a school-wide assembly and celebration. Middle School Chorus members will visit Memorial School to share some festive music with our school community. We look forward to kicking off the holiday vacation with this traditional event!
Pajama Day on Friday, December, 20, 2019
On Friday, December 20th, students are invited to wear comfy pajamas to school for a school wide pajama day. For safety reasons, slippers may not be worn to school. We expect to go outside for recess. Please consider this when dressing your child for school. We recommend tucking an extra pair of sweatpants or a sweatshirt into your child’s bag if their pajamas are thin.
Eyes on Owls - Grade 2 MEPTO Sponsored Enrichment
On Friday, December 6th second grade students were treated to Eyes on Owls, an enrichment program sponsored by MEPTO. Mark and Marcia Wilson visit Memorial School to teach our students about owls. Students met live owls such as New England’s tiniest owl, the Northern Saw-Whet Owl (weighing in at 4 ounces) along with the world’s largest owl, the Eurasian Eagle Owl (with a five foot wingspan!) Students also participated in a hooting lesson. Be sure to ask your 2nd grader about this program.
Changes to Transportation Routines
Please take a moment to read the following reminders about changes to transportation routines for students:
- For safety reasons, children are not permitted to ride home on another child’s bus.
- If you need to change your child’s typical dismissal or transportation routine, please send a note into school that morning with your child's full name describing the change.
- If you are calling the office to make an unexpected change to transportation routines, please do so before noon.
Cold Weather Reminders
As the weather starts to get colder, we make every attempt to get students outside for fresh air and exercise each day. While we do not like to call indoor recess, there are times when we must to ensure the safety of our students and staff. When making this decision, we consider the actual temperature, the wind-chill factor and the condition of our school yard. Please also remember that recess is 25 minutes long. When sending your student to school, please ensure that your child is prepared to go outside for recess. Weather conditions change frequently during the course of the day and it is difficult to predict what the weather will look like during recess time. Parents are asked to put student names or classroom numbers on all winter gear so that we can help reunite items with owners should they get separated.
