Evergreen's Mustang Messenger
June 2021
Hello From Your Principal
It is a special time of year. Spring has sprung, flowers are in bloom, and the tress all around Spokane and on campus have once again shared their leaves.
As we reflect on the odd school year, there are still so many things to think about—those obvious things such as that first day of school with masks, recess at a distance, tons of hand-washing, online learning, BINGO over the intercom, and our Hug in a Mug reading activity. But what makes school so amazing and special are sometimes the less noticeable things—a student’s interaction with new science materials, a kiddo realizing a different way to solve a math problem, a 2nd grader finishing his first chapter book, or a 5th grader writing a paper and having it published in a small-town Canadian newspaper.
School is about relationships, too. At Evergreen we work very hard to build them. When our kiddos know they are welcome and cared for, they are willing to settle in, concentrate, work hard, and take advantage of all that Evergreen has to offer. That was especially true during this COVID year.
So, enjoy some time off and all that summer offers. Slow things down a bit. Unplug. Spend some time outdoors. Read some. Take time to explore. Love on those kiddos just a little more while schedules are less hectic.
When the calendar turns to August and September, know we’ll be here to welcome you and our kiddos right back.
Happy summer,
Mr. Danford, Evergreen's very lucky principal
A Quick Thank You From Mrs. Montecucco
Dear Mustang Families,
What an adventure this year in serving here at Evergreen. But goodness, we would not have changed a thing. Students back full-time, in whatever setting worked best for families, was an absolute success. Thank you for all of your hard work as well as partnering with our staff to make it a great year.
I have so enjoyed building relationships, working with students and supporting staff here at Evergreen. I am excited to take on a new opportunity and have accepted a principal opening at Sunset Elementary next year. It is a little bittersweet in regards to not being here with you all, but I look forward to my next chapter. Thank you for such a rewarding experience. Have a wonderful summer!
Warmly,
Mrs. Montecucco

Reading over summer vacation...
From Study.com…
Reading over summer vacation may not be a priority for children, but parents and teachers should make it one. Why? Summer reading is critical to a child's ability to not only retain information learned the previous year, but also to grow in knowledge and critical thinking skills for the coming year. Literacy expert Julie Wood believes that it is necessary for children to read on a daily basis in order to maintain literacy skills learned in the previous school year.
Encouraging children to read is critical to helping them stay on track with other students and retain information and literacy development over the summer break. If you're not sure what your children should be reading, there are a variety of reading lists available through sources such as Study.com.
Don't forget to keep reading fun. The lists are just suggestions for summer reading. Give your child the opportunity to choose books on his/her own as well. This can help keep reading interesting and inviting. Reading over the summer is a necessity, but it should also be fun!
