Dia de los muertos
HERE’S ONE THING we know: Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. Though related, the two annual events differ greatly in traditions and tone. Whereas Halloween is a dark night of terror and mischief, Day of the Dead festivities unfold over two days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy. Sure, the theme is death, but the point is to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members. In towns and cities throughout Mexico, revelers don makeup and costumes, hold parades and parties, sing and dance, and make offerings to lost loved ones. The rituals are rife with symbolic meaning. The more you understand about this feast for the senses, the more you will appreciate it.
Nov 2 - PD Day
Writers Workshop. K-5. Ask your classroom teacher for loan of the teachers booklet that you can bring if teacher not attending. Will be good for understand what is expected from students and you can keep your student(s) in mind for how to beat support.
Building a Better IEP. Listen for what what goes into an Individualized Education Plan. IEP. Consider what you can look for in an IEP and how to best support your student(s)
Strategic Plan Input. Have a voice. Socorro, our Superintendent, wants to hear from everyone. Good time to do so! Not sure what it’s all about? Totally ok. Come and listen and learn and chime in when and where comfortable.
Budgets. They are hard. Come and learn some about how it all works. Bruce, our Assoc Sup of Finance, is great and the more who understand the money flow and where it goes, the better!
ELD Read Aloud with Gen Cavan. She’s great. An EV teacher. She will make this professional and supportive. Think outside the classroom read aloud, get tips and tricks for supporting all readers in the classroom.
De-escalating behavior. Enough said. :)
Epi Pen. Do you attend field trips? Attend this training.
Mindfulness. Ahhhhhhh. Calm yourself. Help students calm them selves.
School safety-Active shooter. Awareness and preparedness is key to safety. Pair this session with mindfulness perhaps.
Google. It’s the now. Attend what applies to you. Or take a step and attend something that seems a bit advanced for you. You will surprise yourself with what you can do!
Dreambox. If your students use this program you will learn much and be able to best support. I attribute much of my being able to understand and teach math in a common core manner to Dreambox. For real. I taught in GLPP for 3 years at Dunbar. Used this program for 30 minutes three days a week with students. There’s much to know and it’s fun when you understand and can help students. :)
Or read through and see what speaks to you or peeks your curiousity. This day is for you. Go for what you want to learn.
Ok. Hope this helps. When I attend a training or conference I know that not all apply to me. Presenters do best to known audience and / or bring something for everyone. I leave and think “what is one thing I got from this that I will use”. I take that and run with it.
See you all Friday and thank you for all you do to support students who are at the center of everything we do!
