Field Trip to the Holiday Folk Fair International
The Spanish Department took a field trip to the Holiday Folk Fair International in Milwaukee on Friday November 22nd. The Folk Fair International celebrates the heritage and cultures of people from around the world. It includes performances, artisans, educational displays, and a wide variety of delicious food from many different countries. In one evening you can have appetizers from Egypt, a drink from East Africa, dinner from Nepal, tea from the Philippines, and desserts from France! It was an incredible experience!
FBLA & Business Ed
FBLA Regionals will be Saturday, February 1, 2020 @ Muskego High School. We have 15 students competing in a variety of events, both tests and presentations. Students...be sure to study over winter break!
Scheduling for the 2020-2021 school year is quickly approaching. Keep business classes in mind when choosing your classes. To be eligible for NBHS, you must be a junior or senior, AND have completed, or currently enrolled in 3 business classes, with at least a 3.5 GPA in those classes. In addition, you must have an overall GPA of 3.0. Any questions about NBHS, please see Mrs. Firgens or Ms. Hurda.
Math Problem of the Month
Keep Reading!
With winter break approaching, we want to encourage all students to keep reading over break! Research shows that students who take extensive breaks from reading lose reading skills, momentum, and interest; we DO NOT want that to happen! Reading fact: Reading one-hour per day in your chosen field will make a young-adult an expert in seven years! If this is true for a young adult, then having a child read for one-hour a day could open doors to endless opportunities! (nccat.org). All students should have at least one book that they are reading for class or for personal interest! Here are some things that you can do to encourage your child to read over break (or any other time!):
- Ask your child about what they are reading
- Read a book with your child (or model reading habits!)
- Find an audiobook that you can engage in on a road trip
- Help your child find online sources that they can read
- Take a trip to the library or a bookstore to pick out something new to read
Thanks for encouraging your child to read and supporting the work that we do here! Have a wonderful break!

Science Happenings
Anatomy Class:
Our Anatomy and Physiology Class has just finished up half of the human body systems. We have been able to invite a few speakers into our class such as Mr. Bill Hurtley, to give us the perspective of a funeral home director, an EMT and a police officer. We look forward to having many more guest speakers this year: pharmacist, PT, OT, Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist and others that are able to stop by. If you can help out please contact Ms. Penny Messling 882-3546.
Our class will also venture to UW-Whitewater during the Spring Semester to visit with Dr. Peter Mesner to have the opportunity to see human cadavers. We will have the chance to wear gloves and participate in the dissection of both a male and female human cadaver. A huge thanks goes out to Dr. Mesner!!
We look forward to finishing our study of the human body and having a few more speakers in this year…Enjoy the photos of our class working on building our musculoskeletal system on our “Manikens”
Chemistry Class:
Oh how the electrons interact!! Energy on the go!! Just ask any Chemistry student to write out a chemical formula and they should be able to write it out for you and they should be able to write out and balance a chemical equation for you too after the holiday break!! The “heart” of chemistry…Stoichiometry…will begin during the second semester.
Earlier this semester we had Fire Extinguisher training. Mr. Dennis Cooper, Fire Chief, from our very own Fire Department came in and lead the training for each student. This concludes the Fire Safety training for students in the Evansville Community School District.

Agriscience
The Greenhouse classes have been busy learning about the production of holiday wreaths and evergreen trees. Along with learning about this area of the industry, students had the opportunity to put together holiday wreaths and holiday arrangements to deliver to the high school staff.
Students in the Intro to Vet Science have been very busy learning and practicing procedures that they may have to perform in the field like bandaging, medication injections, and suturing wounds. Students will be learning about animal rights versus animal welfare and conducting a research project on an animal rights/animal welfare topic. After winter break, we will be viewing Temple Gradin in class.
Students in Exploring Ag Industries just finished learning about Food Preservation that included making beef jerky and salsa.
Students in the Wildlife, Fish, and Natural Resources classes have been busy this semester. In October, the classes helped to stock Lake Leota with walleye, pike, catfish, and feeder fish. We also took a fishing trip out to Lake Leota in November. The last few weeks students learned about ecosystems and environments and practiced taxidermy on squirrels, pheasants, and fish.
The Leadership class students are polishing their resumes, cover letters, and interview skills. Students in the Large Animal Science TC course dissected bull testicles and prepared touch prep slides to look at sertoli cells and spermatids. They also examined live goat sperm under a microscope. The class just finished their reproduction and genetics unit and will be working on the major livestock species in the coming weeks.
The Evansville FFA Fruit Sale was a successful fundraiser. Students did a great job selling and it offsets the cost numerous FFA events including Leadership Development Events (speaking contests), Career Development Events (judging contests), leadership conferences, state and national convention. Watch for our sale next year, beginning in mid October!
Welding & Woods Lab Complete!
The welding lab received its final pieces of machinery. This included a metal lathe and vertical knee mill. The machinery will need to be positioned and wired. These are big pieces of equipment and require some help from the district office maintenance. The woods lab received its last piece of equipment and will be put into place as well. The dust collection system is operational and is in need of some fine tuning.
Senior Graduation Project
For my senior project, I will be holding a fundraiser for Garding Against Cancer, an organization, founded by Coach Greg Gard, at the Evansville vs Beloit Turner basketball game on January 24th, 2020. There will be a silent auction during the first half, miracle minute during halftime, and I am currently selling shirts for the game. The deadline for these shirts is January 2nd, 2020 and they will be distributed the week before the game. Attached is the link that can be used to purchase the shirts. Thank you and I hope to see everyone at the game. Go Devils! https://gardingdeviltrojan.toppromotions.com/store/catalog

Math Problem of the Month Solution
Answer is: 51
METHOD 1: Consider one die at a time.
Beginning with DIE#1, all numbers 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 are possible. By including DIE#2, we lose 1 as the smallest possible total and gain 7,8,9,10,11, and 12. Hence the possible totals are 2,3,4, … , 12, Including DIE#3, we lose 2 and gain 13,14, … , 18 as possible totals. Continuing on in this manner, we determine that for 10 dice the possible totals are 10, 11, 12, …, 60 which are 51 numbers.
METHOD 2: Use the extreme values.
The smallest possible total occurs when each die is the smallest value, i.e. 1, and it is 10. The largest possible total occurs when each die is 6, the largest possible value of each, and is 60. Since individual dice can vary by 1, every whole number value in between 10 and 60 is also possible. Just as in Method 1, this results in 51 possible totals.
Process for Determining When to Close School
When weather conditions are severe, the Evansville Community School District follows a set of guidelines for determining if schools should be closed. The District will base a decision on what is best for all students. Individual family circumstances may vary. We encourage and strongly support you in making a decision that is best for your child(ren). You are always the best judge of your family’s health and safety. Process for determining school closure due to severe weather: Extreme cold: School closings notification: After school activities when school is closed: Late starts and early dismissal during severe weather: When schools are closed for other reasons: The safety of every child is our highest priority. We appreciate your understanding and your support when school closing decisions are made.
When the National Weather Service issues a wind chill warning for Rock County during the school day, school will be closed. Schools will not necessarily be closed if there is a wind chill advisory for the county, but cancellation will be considered when an advisory shows temperatures may reach -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
We make every effort to have a final decision prior to 6:30 a.m. We then communicate this decision to local news outlets, post information on our website (www.ecsdnet.org), through an automated phone call and in an email to all families. At times, we will post to social media, our website and news/radio stations prior to calls going out to families as we try not to place phone calls prior to 6 am.
When Evansville schools are closed for the day, it also means that all activities scheduled in school buildings for that day are canceled. This includes all programs and all after school activities. Exceptions may be made based on changes in weather conditions.
We try to start school on time and keep school open until the regular dismissal time if road conditions are safe. However, if you feel your child(ren) will be safer at home, it is up to your discretion to determine their attendance. Please notify the school office if absent, dropping off late or picking up early. If there is a 2-hour delay, there will not be morning 4K. Afternoon 4K will proceed as scheduled.
When we close schools for reasons other than severe weather, a notification will be sent to local news outlets, a posting on our website (www.ecsdnet.org), through an automated phone call and in an email to all families. Depending on the circumstances for closing/delay, the District may limit information that is released to the public. Please know, the only reason this would be done would be to keep our top priority, the students, safe.
