Greetings Shaw Montessori Community!

On Monday, we will hold our Shadow Day. Students moving to a new level will be visiting for the day. They are full of nervous excitement as they begin to prepare themselves for new learning adventures!

The one thing in life that is guaranteed is……change! With that, here are the staffing changes for the 22/23 school year:

· Miss Jennifer Collier will be departing to Virginia with Mr. Collier who has a fantastic opportunity to attend a three-year university program.

· Ms. Shaily Currie will be leaving the classroom to become our new IEIS, filling Ms. Colliers shoes. She will be replaced in primary by Miss Ashlynn Kahle who is new to our staff.

· Ms. Jodi Schramm is retiring to become the nanny for her new grandbaby. No replacement identified yet.

· Ms. Emily Oakley will be leaving Shaw to return to a private sector job. She will be replaced by Miss Caroline Campbell.

· Miss Susan Cruz will be leaving the classroom full time to return as our permanent substitute teacher. No replacement identified yet.

Our departing staff has brought great value to our children, our community, and their colleagues. They will be greatly missed!

Dear Shaw Community,

I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to work with you all the past six years at Shaw Montessori. My first group of Kindergarten students that I taught are now in the fifth grade! It has been amazing to watch them grow and blossom. My time at Shaw Montessori has fostered so much growth for me personally and professionally. This program is truly one of kind and there are many dedicated people that help to make it thrive. This summer, my husband and I will be heading across the country to Virginia. This opportunity is bittersweet; I am going to truly miss you! Thank you, Shaw Montessori, for the light you shine in my life each and every day.

With Gratitude,

Jennifer Collier

New Teacher Spotlight

Hello Shaw families!

I am thrilled to be joining your lovely community this Fall 2022. I moved to the sunny state of Arizona this past year from Lawrence, Kansas. I completed my undergraduate degree at Washburn University, majoring in Integrated Studies. Currently, I am completing my graduate degree through Loyola University, while finishing Montessori training at the Southwest Institute of Montessori Studies. During my free time, I enjoy reading, being one with nature, and exploring new coffee shops!

I am beyond ecstatic to be learning alongside your children through the Montessori philosophy. Have a lovely summer, I look forward to seeing you this Fall!

Message From Nurse Rose

Big picture

Note from the Nurse, the school has received a shipment of Covid 19 Test Kits that expire mid-November. If any family would like to pick some up next week, just stop by the front office.

Immunization Information for next school year: Any student entering Kindergarten is due Dtap #5, Polio #4, MMR #2 and Varicella #2. Most preschoolers at Shaw Montessori, who have already turned 5 yrs old are already compliant; any students missing these immunizations will be sent an Immunization Referral. Once a student turns 11 yrs old, Meningitis and Tdap are due. These cannot be done early but please take your student in this summer if they turn 11. I will also send home an Immunization Referral for these students. Please ensure Immunizations are up to date before start of school for all students who are not currently compliant with Arizona School Immunization Requirements. Here is the link for Arizona Immunization Information: https://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/immunization/index.php .

I hope everyone has a safe and fun summer!

Summer Homework

Big picture

We shared our summer homework folders and learning expectations at the last Site Council meeting. The material provides an opportunity to offer structure and systems for our children during the summer. Please consider the suggestions and ideas provided in the folders to incorporate into your child’s daily routine as their “homework.”

Your child should access the folder for the grade level that they will be entering this fall. Additionally, your child’s teacher may contact you with specific opportunities based on your child’s individual needs.

Garden Update

Big picture

Greetings!

We concluded our final week of pizza lessons. We learned a little more Italian geography and harvested more basil than we could possibly consume. I think the students have had enough gluten until the end of summer. Thank you, Will, for our pizza oven. We’re definitely getting our money’s worth.

I took the chickens up to Payson for summer camp. They have a great hangout in the pines at 7,800 ft. It’s about 20-30 degrees cooler up there and they looked super happy as I drove away. Big thanks to Christine for setting us up with some temporary chicken parents.

We also hosted a garden party for the 7th and 8th graders. We made aguas frescas de sandias and garnished them with limes, jalepenos and basil. It was a refreshing time. We will bring back aguas frescas in August for all the students. A big thanks to all the middle schoolers for helping maintain that space. I could not have done it with you and the rest of the school.

We have finally made it to the end of the year! This year has been so magical. Thank you, Shaw Montessori, for letting me into your community and allowing me to teach your children how to care for the Earth and themselves. I am excited for next year. We will be doing some great things, especially with food literacy. I’ll be on campus over the summer. If you’re around come say hello. You can walk the garden and pick some flowers. There will be plenty of extra produce to give away. ‘Roll thru’ as the youngins say! Otherwise, see you in August!

Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org

Over & out,

Mr. Moench
