Perkins School News
June 2019
Dear Perkins School Families,
June is here, and another year has nearly passed. It’s hard to believe that I have been the Principal at Perkins School for nearly 20 years and this will be my last time writing this letter to you, the families at Perkins School. It is a bittersweet time for me because I love my job here so much! There’s nothing better than seeing the smiling faces of the boys and girls coming in each day, getting hugs and seeing how excited they are to be here, loving being with their friends and teachers. This has been the best job I could have ever hoped for and I’m so lucky to be a part of this school district and community for the past 25 years. I am also looking forward to being able to spend more time with my family in my retirement. My daughter will be a senior in high school next year and I have missed so many events over the years because of my busy schedule. Hopefully next year I will be able to participate in some things that I was unable to be a part of in the past.
As we head toward the end of the year, please join me in helping our students in keeping their stamina for learning going strong. It’s always a challenge with the warm weather to keep the focus on school, but we hope to keep learning at the forefront with your help. In June, we have many activities and events planned, including Field Day on June 14th, our last monthly assembly on June 21st, Second Grade Graduation on June 25th which is also our last day of school for students. There is a list of all events below in this newsletter.
On behalf of all of the staff at Perkins School, thank you for your support throughout the year as we have worked together to help every student work toward success every day. We couldn’t do it without you.
Thank you again for being a part of this wonderful ride I’ve been on over the years -- I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Best wishes for a safe and happy summer,
Susan Achille ~ Principal

From the Nurse
Reminders from the Health office:
· All medications need to be picked up from the health office last day of school or call your school’s nurse to arrange pick up time/date.
· Copies of child’s 2019 well – visit from pediatrician’s office can be turned into your school’s health office
· If your child borrowed clothes this past year, please wash and return to Health office
· Please remember to have sneakers for playground and gym. Safety is an issue.
Summer Safety:
· Make outdoor time a safe time – wear a helmet when riding bikes, skateboards, and scooters. Knee pads and elbow pads are easy to wear and add more protection.
· Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac contain oil causing an allergic skin reaction that looks like swollen itchy red bumps and blisters appearing wherever the oil has touched the skin. Check the areas around your home and teach your kids to recognize and avoid it.
· Stinging insects are back – If you are stung, remove the stinger as soon as possible with a scraping motion. Wash with soap and water and apply a cold compress. If trouble breathing, severe swelling or fainting occurs, call 911 or an emergency number right away.
· Animal bites – don’t disturb a sleeping dog or a dog that’s eating! Wash wounds well with soap and water and call the pediatrician. A tetanus or rabies shot may be needed.
· Ticks are already a problem in our area – use tweezers or fingers to grasp as close to the head as possible and pull the tick away from where it is attached. Call the pediatrician for symptoms of a rash or fever.
· Swimming pools will be opening this month – a great way to have some fun in the sun and spend time with family and friends. Review water and sun safety rules every day, and don’t forget to use sunscreen.
· Remember, the sun’s rays are strongest between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm. Use SPF 15 or higher, even on cloudy days. It is important to get a healthy dose of sunshine each day J

Ms. Kelly Puckett Library Teacher Assistant
Ms. Puckett grew up in Phelps, New York. The Phelps Community Library is where she spent many days with her grandmother who volunteered there for several years. Her grandmother taught her all sorts of things about the library. Ms. Puckett loved reading the books and exploring the library.
Ms. Puckett graduated from Finger Lakes Community College with an Associate’s degree in Social Science. After graduating, she decided to pursue a career in the restaurant business. This took her many places, spanning from New York to Florida and to New Orleans, Louisiana. She met many fascinating people with very interesting stories to tell. Ms. Puckett met her Fiancé of 13 years in a restaurant where they worked together. They settled down together in Clifton Springs, and had a little boy named Aiden. She took off 2 and half years to be with her son after he was born.
When Ms. Puckett was ready to come back to work, she decided she wanted to do something different. She has a very dear friend and neighbor that is also a teacher that encouraged her to apply here at Newark for a teacher assistant position. Although she was unsure of herself at first, she realized that she absolutely loves working here. She loves being a part of the childrens’ education and watching them grow and become excited about learning. She really enjoys being in the library sharing the love of reading with all the school. She feels very lucky to be here at Perkins School working with such wonderful educators.
Ms. Puckett’s Favorites:

Field Days
Field Day is almost here!
Field Day is Friday, June 14, Flag Day!
This year's theme is the "United States of Field Day."
All the activities, games, and relays are inspired by the 50 United States of America.
Field day is always a successful day because of the dedicated volunteers who give of themselves to be here to help the students complete the 24 different centers. If you would like to be a part of making field day successful for all the Perkins School students, please contact Mrs. Moak. She would greatly appreciate any help during this special day.
