Attendance: A Key To Your Child’s Success
We have noticed an increase in students with significant absences as well as tardiness. Research shows a direct correlation between student’s school attendance and their performance on state tests. Instruction is based on previous learning and students with high absenteeism are missing the foundation on which to build new skills.
Being late for school hurts a child’s learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss approximately 30 hours of instruction during the year. In addition, they miss the early morning routines that set the schedule and tone for their entire day.
Children can copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the demonstrations, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive. Activities such as Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop involve whole group as well as teacher instruction and interaction that cannot be “made up”.
Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational background – one that can only be gained through regular school attendance. Schools can’t do their job if your child is absent. Learning builds day by day. When a child misses a day of school they miss a day of learning.
You can improve your child’s school attendance by:
· Talking with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
· Try to avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
· Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting plenty of sleep and exercise.
· Don’t accept excuses for why your child “must” miss or be late for school.
· Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.
* Research shows that attendance is one of the most important factor in school success!
Healthy School Enviroment
It is that time of year, when cold, flu & other “bugs” hit our homes and infect our bodies. Unfortunately, our children are not immune to these ailments. This often leaves us as parents to ask the question, “Should I keep my child home from school today?”
Children who are feeling miserable are often unable to participate and engage in learning.
Here are some tips to consider when determining if a child should stay home:
First the easy ones….
*If your child is running a fever, or has run a fever in the past 24 hours, he/she should remain home.
*If your child has vomited in the past 24 hours, or is very nauseous, he/she should remain home.
*If your child has any type of infectious illness (i.e. pink eye, strep throat, head lice, etc.) he/she should remain home until under treatment.
It is more difficult to determine whether your child should stay home when he/she has a runny nose, persistent cough, tummy ache, headache, etc…..
Some rules of thumb to consider are:
- Will your child be able to manage his/her symptoms during the 7 hour school day?
- Are the symptoms likely to infect other children who will be in close proximity?
- Would I want a fellow classmate with the same symptoms to be sitting next to, or across from, my child all day?
Certainly we encourage children to have excellent school attendance. We simply ask that you do your best to gauge your child’s symptoms, especially those of the past 24 hours, and allow him/her to recover when ill.
Thank you for helping up to keep a healthy school environment for all who enter.
Sincere Regards,
Michelle Briegel
