Summit Report
January 27, 2023
A Note from Principal Mica Harasek
Hello Mighty Mountaineer Families,
This is an exciting and busy month, which makes the school year fly by. I cannot believe we are in the second semester already. February is also a magical month as it is finally starting to stay brighter outside. And, even more important, students are hitting their stride and are “getting it.” Teachers are realizing their consistent, hard work is paying off, and they are seeing the fruits of their labor. Each day, Seattle Hill educators are making a difference in the lives of students. I think it is because our staff has a never-ending belief in our students. And, truly, our students are dedicated because of you, our families. So, I just want to take a moment to thank all of you for sharing your children with us, for trusting us, and for partnering with us. We love each of our students and enjoy helping them learn. THANK YOU! And Happy Valentine’s Day... or as we call it in elementary school, Happy Friendship Day!
Warmly,
Mica Harasek

Library News from Mrs. Harkins
***
The Salmon are back! Last week 500 Coho Salmon eggs were placed in the fish tank that is housed in the library. They already love their new home so much that they started hatching this week. This is such a fun experience for the kids. Every week they come to library, and the tank looks different. The Coho will stay with us until later this spring when they will be released by the fifth graders (SURPRISE!) into their home stream to grow and become adult salmon.
Be More Awesome Theme of the Month: Kindness
Be More Awesome at Home:
- What is kindness? Define what it means to you and your family.
- Discuss why is being kind important.
- Share some examples of kindness in different settings (at home, at the store, in your community).
- Self-care is a form of kindness. Why is being kind to ourselves important?
- As a family, make a goal to record your acts of kindness daily. What was it like to be so aware of your kind acts? Did it promote any changes in yourself or others?
Kindergarten Registration
This open house style event will start in the gym. Future students and their families will be invited to visit with staff, tour the school, explore a bus, and turn in their registration paperwork for the coming year. February Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Black History Month and Lunar New Year
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Please join with us this month as we acknowledge Black History Month and Lunar New Year.
Black History Month origins date back over 100 years. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), founded in 1915, originally designated the second week of February as a time for researching and promoting the achievements of Black Americans. The second week of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
By the late 1960s, the week had evolved into a month on many college campuses. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month and called upon the public to honor the often-over-looked contributions of Black Americans to American history. Since 1928, the ASALH has selected a theme for each year. The theme for 2022 is “Black Health and Wellness”.
February also brings the Lunar New Year. Also, or more commonly known as Chinese New Year, this is one of the most important celebrations in East and Southeast Asian cultures. The celebration coincides with the first new moon between the end of January and runs until the full moon arrives.
Celebrations vary amongst cultures, but is typically marked by food, decorations, and activities which promote prosperity, abundance, and togetherness. The celebration concludes with the Lantern Festival which includes parades, dances, and fireworks.
For some more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link.

Students to Receive Panorama Survey in Spring
We will again be asking our 3rd through 12th grade students to participate in the Panorama survey for social-emotional learning. This survey was given to students last school year and in the fall 2022.
Panorama helps schools and districts transform their approach to education, so that every student thrives in school, every student benefits from an excellent education, and every student graduates prepared with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets they need to thrive in the modern, ever-changing world. Through our work to improve education, we help create a world where every child has equitable access to opportunities in school and in society more broadly. Panorama is a tool used by the district in conjunction with multiple other resources, such as attendance, behavior, grades, etc.
For elementary, the Panorama questions center on their current knowledge, how they feel about the school environment, and whether they have access to staff and resources to feel safe and successful. For secondary, the questions center on the same areas and further explore whether students feel they have the skills, opportunity, or ability for personal and academic growth along with social awareness and positive relationships. The survey window will be open during February. Survey results will be available in March after the survey window closes. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's principal.
Our goal as a district and community is to ensure that each student feels safe, welcomed, and supported in our schools and while attending school activities. The information provided through this survey is one tool we can use to hear student voice and perspective. Other considerations will continue to include conversations with students, families, and staff along with monitoring of academic progress and social-emotional awareness. It is ok to not feel ok, but please know that there is help and support so that it does not have to remain that way.
Click here for a link to more information about the Panorama survey.
Partner with us for Healthy Schools
In the last several weeks we have had several students coming to school with symptoms of respiratory and other illness. Because these illnesses spread quickly through the classroom, we are asking you to observe the following guidelines when deciding whether to send your child to school.
Please keep your child home if they have:
- A fever (>100.4 F) or chills. Your child should stay home for 24 hours after the fever is gone, without taking fever-reducing medication (ie.Tylenol/Advil);
- A cough, muscle or body aches, difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell;
- Significant congestion or runny nose, sore throat, reddened eyes, green or yellow drainage from the nose;
- Fatigue or headache;
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea (24 hours free - before returning to school).
If your child has any of the above symptoms, please reach out to your health care provider. It is encouraged that those with symptoms be tested for COVID-19. If testing positive, please reach out to your school nurse/health room for further guidance.
One of the most effective ways to control the spread of illness in school is to keep your child home when symptoms first appear. Frequent hand washing, covering mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing, wearing masks, socially distancing, and receiving preventable vaccines, help prevent the spread of germs, viruses and illness.

School & District News
- Listserv - If you would like to receive district and school newsletters, or if you have a high school student who wants to receive the school Daily Bulletin, please subscribe to our listserv subscription tool. For directions on how to subscribe or change your subscription preferences (for those already signed up), please click here.
- Facebook - Today, 10,000 Facebook fans receive regular district updates through our district's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/snohomishschooldistrict. This site is just one of many ways we communicate with our students, staff, families and community. Although we are aware of other Facebook pages, please note that this is the only verified Facebook page of the Snohomish School District and is where official information is posted.
- School Messenger - Our district uses the School Messenger automated system as a tool for communication with our parents, families and staff. School Messenger works with the district’s student-data system (Skyward/Family Access) to notify families and staff through phone and/or email of emergencies, critical school and district messages, school/district closures, inclement weather, attendance issues, underfunded student meal accounts and other events/activities. The overall goal of using this service is for parents and families to receive critical information about Snohomish schools - especially information that affects their children - in a timely manner. As long as we have accurate primary phone numbers and email addresses on record for our students in Skyward/Family Access, families should automatically receive these messages when they are sent out.
