We continue to focus of Math in the real world. We will do this by completing word problems having to do with electricity around us, using money amounts to figure out what something is, using time to help report emergencies, picking out geometrical shapes that we at a virtual park, graphing our vocabulary words, and using a map to find forms of energy.
In April will be creating virtual shopping lists, identifying coins and bills and the amount. Some of us will be making change. We will be determining if we have enough money to buy specific items. We will solve word problems using money, and we may even run a store here in our classroom!

In March in General Music class we continue a unit on Black History Month. 4th Grade studied Marian Anderson, the first African American opera singer, and her contribution to the future Civil Rights Movement. We also learn how to read and play songs using Do, Mi, Sol and La. The 5th Grade finished a Unit on Jazz & Ella Fitzgerald that ties into a Unit on African Drumming Circles. We played authentic African instruments combined with western instruments to play an Ensemble number with 6 parts along with various sound recordings. Our newest unit will take us through May for our trip to the NY Philharmonic. This trip will be on Thursday, May 9th. This year’s theme is Immigration. We are learning about 5 immigrant composers, 4 still living. The curriculum dives into one’s identity as an immigrant and how it influences the music created.

We started with the history of our space program (NASA) and the students learned about teacher/astronaut Christa McCauliffe and the Space Shuttle Challenger. In three stages the students designed and constructed rockets using the engineer design process. Stage 1 - digital online design. Stage 2 - paper & straw propelled rockets. Stage 3 - Recycled material Rockets.
