Our Volunteers are the Best!
For the past three years members of the Lake Forest Covenant Church Reading Volunteer Program has been reading to 1st grade students at Muskegon’s Moon School. Students in the classrooms of Sarah Hirdes (and Lisa Cherry), Kathleen Varboncoeur, and Kelly Mundt were able to reap the benefits. This positive and rewarding program and its dedicated volunteers will return to Moon School for the 2013/2014 school-year.
The Lake Forest Covenant Church Reading Volunteer Program strives to have three volunteers at Moon School each school day. During the 2012/2013 school-year, the program accumulated 288 volunteer days, reading 2 ½ hours each of those days. That equates to 1,382 student contacts and approximately 720 total hours of reading!
Moon School principal, Alina Fortenberry, expressed her sentiments by saying, “The volunteer services that our community members provide to Muskegon Public Schools helps build relationships of mutual respect between students and their mentors and assists with promoting academic achievement. These volunteers have been very dedicated and committed with serving our students!”
In keeping volunteer readers assigned to the same classroom, these volunteers have developed relationships with the students. As program coordinator Warren Wickland states, "Trusted counselors, mentors, and guides make an indelible mark on the lives they touch, and they provide the two ingredients to success in life--caring and sharing--that cannot be learned or purchased".
