Port Susan Middle School
Family Update for 10.08.23
I can begin to see our routines established and student focus coming together. It is very important that we continue to work together as we support their social emotional and academic needs. Throughout their middle school experience, we want to make sure that all students feel safe and confident to grow as individuals. This is something that we want to always partner with families in helping to educate students to choose kindness. Thank you for your support and communication with your student.

6-8th grade FLASH curriculum
Your student is going to have health class for one quarter during the 2023-2024 school year. Health classes will be using the FLASH (Family Life and Sexual Health) lessons linked below. All instructional material is available for parent preview. This will allow you and your child to have some meaningful family discussions both before and after the classroom lessons.
There will also be an opportunity to view the materials at an open house event through our district office in October. If you have any questions about this event or the attached curriculum, please contact Colin Ryan, email@example.com
After previewing the materials attached to this email, parents who wish to have their child excused from participation may sign the release form below or send an email to Sarah Oldow, firstname.lastname@example.org
State law provides that a parent or guardian must preview the materials before they can have their child excused.
This week, Stanwood United Cross Country raced Burlington Edison on a course that tested them physically and mentally last night. Our athletes raced well and supported each other as a team. There were a lot of exciting fights to the finish. Nice work, Stanwood United!

On Monday, the Port Susan Knights JV soccer team played an exciting game in the rain vs the North Whidbey Cougars. The Knights did an amazing job but came up just a bit short on the scoreboard and lost by a score of 1-3. The Honor the game bracelet goes to Acacia for her great attitude and her willingness to do whatever she needs to do to help her team. Congratulations! The Varsity soccer team played a very tough North Whidbey team. The Knights had several close shots on goal and played great against an aggressive defense. We had several players step up and play new positions on the field. Our team never stops encouraging one another and giving it their all. The honor of the game bracelet goes to Grace. She played a new spot with a smile and amazing effort. Way to go Knights!
On Wednesday the Port Susan JV Soccer team played a fun back and forth game with the Cascade Kodiaks. The exciting game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Knights continue to work hard and improve every game. The Honor of the game bracelet goes to Addy C. for her awesome attitude and the kindness she shows her teammates everyday. Way to Knights! The Varsity soccer team played their best game of the season against Cascade. The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead and battled hard to hold off the aggressive Kodiak team. The girls played amazing defense and had great touches on the ball which produced constant pressure on offense. What an outstanding overall team performance! The Honor of the game bracelet goes to Kelina for her tough play and leadership on and off the field. Congratulations on a great game. Go Knights!
Staff Shout Out
In honor of National School Lunch Week, this week we are honoring Janet Jones. Janet oversees our PSMS school cafeteria, and helps to make sure our students have healthy meals available every day. President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW) in 1962 to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child's life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. #NSLW23 will be celebrated October 9-13, 2023. Janet has worked in the district for 23 years, the last 3 at Port Susan Middle School. What she enjoys the most about PSMS is the connection from all of the staff to each of the students. Staff (from Mrs. Almanza down) works to get to know each student and what's going on with them. She appreciates the focus on building relationships in order to truly support students. In her spare time, Mrs. Jones enjoys traveling. Her favorite places are Europe and Mexico. But really anywhere that a plane or car will take her, she is happy!
If your student will be absent due to illness or family business, please call the school at 360.629.1366 or send email to email@example.com to excuse the absence prior or the morning of to avoid an email or phone call. All absences must be excused within 72 hours of a student returning to school.
As you can see below, on regular schedule (Mon/Tue/Thur/Fri), class begins at 7:40 a.m. and on Wednesdays (late start throughout the district), secondary classes begin at 9:00 a.m. As a district, we will always be on late start Wednesday schedules unless it is an early release day.
