What are the endangered species?
While there is over 105 endargered species in the Gulf of Castellammare, the most endangered is the monk seal. With only about 1,000 seals left in the world. Its an extraordinary site to actuallly see one in the wild.
Monk Seals
The Monk Seal (Monachus schauinslandi) is one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world and their population is declining. Monk seals are endemic to Castellamare, meaning they are native and are not found anywhere else in the world. Castellammare monk seals are protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).
