ACURIL HONORS PEDRO PADILLA-ROSA
AT THE 47TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN PUERTO RICO
ACURIL 2017 PUERTO RICO DEDICATES ITS CONFERENCE TO PEDRO PADILLA-ROSA, MPA, MIS (R.I.P.)
PEDRO PADILLA-ROSA, ACURIL 2006-2007 Past president, was born in New York but was brought up in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. His university studies were carried out at the University of Puerto Rico, in both Mayagüez and Río Piedras campuses, and at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor.
His bachelor’s degree was earned in the field of Communications, with a concentration on Journalism and Public Relations, from the Mayagüez Campus in 1981. He pursued a Master’s in Public Administration, with concentration on Labor Relations, from the Río Piedras Campus, and graduated in 1987. His Master’s in Information Sciences, with a concentration in Law Libraries, was obtained from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Campus, in 1991.
In his eagerness to keep abreast in the information field, he joined different organizations, such as the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), the Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries (SEAALL), the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL), which he presided from 2006 to 2007, and the Association of Law Librarians in Puerto Rico. A leader by nature, in these associations he held different positions from member to chair, team working.
Under his presidency in ACURIL, he organized the XXXVII Annual Conference in Puerto Rico, which was dedicated to the Equitable Access to Information and Knowledge in the Caribbean: An Inalienable Right of all Human Beings. The international event, that ended being most successful, was held June 3-9, 2007, at the InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino, in Puerto Rico. It brought together some 300 information specialists in the Caribbean.
His dedication and excellent work has been distinguished by different organizations. Among the honors received have been the Vilma Rivera de Bayrón Award bestowed by the Law Librarians Association of Puerto Rico (Asociación de Bibliotecarios de Derecho de Puerto Rico -ABDPR) in 2006. In 2007, the Graduate School of Information Sciences and Technologies, of the University of Puerto Rico honored him as one of the Leaders in the Information Field in Puerto Rico; and, on the same year, ACURIL bestowed on him The ACURILEANA, The Medal of Excellence, for his continuous and most significant endeavor in the field and the organization.
On Wednesday, September 24, 2014, the funeral honors of our distinguished library colleague Pedro Padilla-Rosa were held. To honor his memory, his excellent endeavor in the field and the organization, ACURIL dedicates its annual conference ACURIL 2017 PUERTO RICO, to be held June 4-8, 201, in the city of San Juan.
