There he found two locals, the Branger brothers, skiing at night to avoid fellow villagers’ derision.

With them he made the first pass of the 8,000ft Maienfelder Furka mountain passage.

He was also, according to the Telegraph, the first Englishman to write of the thrill of skiing, saying it took you “as near to flying as any earthbound man can”.

Bode Miller of the USA

Bode Miller is one of onlsy two male alpine skiers in history to win medals in all the four disciplines. His haul of five at Salt Lake City and Vancouver includes Super-Combined gold in 2010.

His ability to speak his mind, love of partying and failure to tow the US team line, and rebelling against the stereotypical all-American image of a sporting hero has got him into some hot scrapes with the US press over the years. Nike’s advertising campaign for 2006 invited Americans to “Join Bode.” Washington Post sportswriter Sally Jenkins asked: “Where? At the bar?”

Most famous quote: “My goal is to ski as fast as the natural universe will allow.”
Where is he now? Still out there and racing. He wrote a book, Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun. Right now he’s in Sochi and hoping to add to his haul of medals.

Poppen’s invention was known as the “snurfer”, a combination of snow and surf.Snowboarding was first included in the winter Olympics in 1998.
