Stanly County is located in the Piedmont region of the state. The bordering counties are: Cabarrus, Rowan, Montgomery, Anson, Davidson & Union. Stanly County was founded in 1841 and is named for John Stanly.

Come to the next Board of Commissioners Meeting! The Board’s major responsibilities include adopting the annual County budget, setting the County property tax rate, and assessing and establishing priorities on the many community needs, especially those related to health, education, welfare, mental health and the environment. The Stanly County Board of Commissioners is composed of seven members elected at large for a period of four year staggered terms. The current chairperson is Jann Lowder, pictured right below. Albemarle is governed by a council-manager-mayor plan.

Albemarle was founded as the county seat of Stanly County in 1871. The City of Albemarle is served by Mayor Elbert L. Whitley and seven council members. Council meetings are held the first and third Mondays of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the City Annex Building at 157 North Second Street in downtown Albemarle. These members serve 4-year terms. The council hired City Manager Raymond Allen in 1986, who continues to serve in that capacity.
