Mrs. Overfield and Mrs. Hickoff, Secretaries
From the Desk of Mr. Tiemann
We began last week talking about our Positivity Project (P2) Character Strength of #PERSEVERANCE! Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance are able to handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals.
For the next two weeks (starting Monday, Jan. 15), we will be talking about #HOPE/OPTIMISM! :-) Hope and optimism represent a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals.
Please help make that home-to-school connection by using these words and talking about our character strengths with your child(ren). Feel free to share their awesomeness on our State Road Facebook page (@StateRoadElementary) with the hashtag #OtherPeopleMatter.
Attendance Awareness
Chronic absenteeism is missing 10 percent of school days for any reason – excused and unexcused. Based upon research, it marks the point when students start to fall behind academically because they have missed too many school days. Learn more about reducing chronic absence and find out how you can help at http://awareness.attendanceworks.org/

Lice Prevention!
We all need to take preventative measures and educate ourselves and our children on how to prevent the spread of lice. Children should not share combs, hats (including ball caps at sporting events), pillows (at sleepovers), or coats/jackets (especially with hoods).
Children should not 'touch heads' while sitting close to a friend. Children/girls with long hair can keep it pulled back in a ponytail or braids, and spritzed with hairspray and/or tea tree oil. Please also refer to the lice prevention & treatment information found on our website (click the link below):

NEWS FROM OUR PTO!
From our PTO Popcorn committee: The popcorn committee has run into issues this school year with missing popcorn. Although we encourage the popper's use for school and PTO events, please let either Tisha Andrews or Rachel Perantoni (or any PTO board member) know if you use seeds from the popcorn supply. We have had unexpected shortages twice this year due to missing seeds on popcorn days. We are happy to share the popcorn and popper, but please do not leave us short on popcorn Fridays. We do not want to face a student mutiny if we can't fulfill all of our orders! We quite literally bought out Walmart last month, just to make it. We might not be as lucky next time. We would also like to thank everyone who has volunteered to help on popcorn days throughout the school year. We can't do it without our wonderful volunteers!
Our next PTO meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 9:30am in the library. All parents/guardians of children at State Road are more than welcome to come. We would love to hear your thoughts on things we can do!
A very special and HUGE Thank you to all the volunteers who helped at Santa's Workshop last month!!!

Please Help Prevent the Spread of Sickness, Head Lice, etc...
Parents: We have had several reported cases of Colds with fevers and the stomach flu over the past few weeks. The best way to prevent the spread of sickness, communicable diseases, or issues such as head lice is to take preventative steps at home prior to sending your child to school. Please also contact the office right away to let us know of any sickness or confirmed case of lice that your child may have. For more ‘health’ related information, please visit the State Road website and select “Student Health Info” under the Information Tab. Thank you!
Please visit the "Student Health Information" section of our website (link below) for more information!
