Situational Uses for Theme Studies and Inquiry Based Learning
· Inquiry based learning would be used when the teacher wants to spark questions and get a child’s brain working.
· A theme study would be used when there are many different state standards that have something in common such as ancient people, landmark, ideas, or religion.
· In theme, studies would be using interdisciplinary with using the theme to figure out what the students were focusing on, learning, and acknowledgment. It is using the board theme for the curriculum for the students to be studying in.
· In inquiry-based learning is where the instructor has engaging activities throughout the classroom for the students to build their self-confidence and knowledge.
· Situational uses for theme studies and inquiry-based learning are in science and social studies. Teachers can introduce a big idea and then have students ask questions to develop their theme of study.
When Would Each Situation Would be Appropriate or Inappropriate?
· Inquiry learning would be inappropriate when children need to be focused on a new times such as a new way of doing math. It would be appropriate when the teacher understand that there is a lot to cover and the children need to better understand the concepts because they will be using them in the testing, future, or in life.
· A theme study would be appropriate when there are many state standards that have something in common and they can all be linked together and done instead of spread throughout the year and forget some of the items that they share.
· An appropriate situation in theme studies would be in science, history, and drama class the instructor would have the students focus on an important issue. They would use the idea to bring out the outer descriptive of the subject.
· It would be inappropriate when there is only two items that have something in common and could not be made into a longer plan or unit.
· An inappropriate situation in inquiry-based learning would be the instructor is not going through the curriculum and the students not understanding the concepts. The educator would consistently use the same subject over and over again.
Can a Teacher Use Theme and Inquiry Studies at the Same Time?
·Yes!
·A teacher can both ask question and keep a theme at the same time. In fact, one could say that they are better together than done separately. When together it increases the amount of information that a student learns and makes them retain the information longer because it is not straight out of a book.
· The teacher can do theme studies and inquiry-based learning at the same time because they can have groups of students ask questions and figuring out the concept along with using the same topic.
· Teachers can do them both at the same time because teachers can allow the students interest to guide the direction of the theme study on a particular topic.
