Parents/guardians may excuse their students by using ParentConnect. The front office receives an automatic notification regarding excused absences generated through ParentConnect. These excusals are processed for blue passes. If you decided to call the school, you may leave a message at 742-7009. Also, these messages are retrieved every 10 minutes to ensure blue passes are processed. If you need to speak to a person, please call 742-7019. Sometimes there is a high volume of calls, please consider leaving a message or excusing your student via ParentConnect. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

We truly appreciate your students’ patience and focus last week during AK Star and Science assessments. While we’ve tested most of our 9th and 10th grade students, we will hold make-ups on Thursday, April 13th (English/Language Arts 9th grade), Friday, April 14th (Math, 9th grade), and Tuesday, April 18th (Science, 10th grade). We will send summons to the students that missed the original assessment date. If you have opted-out your student, they will not receive a summons for the assessment.

Did you know that you can get a daily report for your child’s attendance through Parent Connect? Most families are aware of the robocall generated by our Q reporting system each day for an unexcused absence, but the call doesn’t specify which class(es) were missed. Now you have access to student attendance at your fingertips! In order to get this daily report emailed to you, follow these steps:

1. Login to Parent Connect

2. In the top right corner, click on the link or tab that says “Email Signup” or “Email Notifications”

3. Select the “Attendance” box for any child, and you will receive a daily email detailing attendance for each period

Attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. Now you have the power to have more informed conversations with your child(ren) about attendance! Let’s work together.

Prom is this Saturday, April 15, from 7-11 pm at the Anchorage Museum. Ticket sales will take place this week during lunch and after school on Thursday and Friday. Tickets are $50 per person, cash only. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Only juniors and seniors may buy tickets to Prom. Freshmen and sophomores may only attend Prom as the date of a junior or senior. Students who submitted a guest pass by last week's deadline also need to buy a ticket for their guest. A Dimond junior or senior may only bring either an underclassman or a guest, but not both.

Prom is a formal dance; formal gowns and tuxedos are typical attire. No jeans, hats, or revealing attire permitted. Refreshments and water will be provided at the dance. A photobooth will also be available. Students must arrive by 9:15 pm and must have school ID (or other photo ID) to enter.

Court will be recognized at the school assembly on April 14. All students can vote for King and Queen during Prom Week; they will be announced and crowned during Prom.

• We are looking for donations and financial sponsors for the food, games, and fun provided for our seniors at no cost to them. These donations will go towards our food trucks, our rental equipment, and other incidentals.

• Donations can be accepted in the form of cash and check (checks made out to “Senior Fun Day”) and can be dropped off in our front office with Ms. Yun or given directly to Ms. Hunt in the Activities office.

• Donations are also tax deductible, please contact Danielle Essary at essary_danielle@asdk12.org for further details or with any questions (If you would like a receipt for tax deduction purposes, please donate via check.)

• We will be looking for volunteers for the day of the event for set-up/take-down/clean-up

The FBI Anchorage Field Office is currently accepting applications for its 2023 Teen Academy Program, which will welcome rising junior and senior high school students (2023-24) for an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. The FBI Teen Academy will be on August 10-11, 2023, from 9:00am – 4:00pm, at the FBI Anchorage Field Office. Conflict is a natural part of life and relationships. Learning how to navigate conflict in a healthy way is an important life skill, and takes some practice and support, even for adults. Some of our students are struggling to resolve conflicts in ways that encourage growth, compassion and safety. Each week we will highlight a strategy for conflict resolution in our News Blast to families. Students will also hear about conflict resolution in our morning announcements and we are working with our Peer Mentorship group to help spread the message about conflict resolution. Our hope is that these tips might lead to conversations at home and application by students at school. Thanks for supporting our work towards a safer and kinder school environment.

The Staff Parking lot is NOT a drop off or pick up zone. It creates a dangerous environment for our staff arriving to and leaving from school when families use this parking lot as a student pick up zone. There are several other locations families can use for drop off and pick up, such as the student parking lot and the roundabout. Keep our staff safe and use the designated areas.

A reminder and warning to students from your Anchorage Police Department School Resource Officers referencing nicotine products and electronic smoking products (“Vapes”). Minors are not permitted to possess, consume, purchase or distribute any form of nicotine products or e-cigarettes, aka vapes. Minors found to be in violation can be cited and may face school discipline. “Vapes” and nicotine products are not permitted on school property and are illegal for minors to possess or consume. Alaska State Law also prohibits minors from consuming, possessing and purchasing marijuana and THC products related to vaping, “dab pens” etc. Students may face the consequence of arrest if found to be in possession of any item containing THC or other controlled substances on school campus or in the public. On December 20, 2019, federal law was changed to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products to age 21.

After reviewing the federal law, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development determined that: “The minimum age to buy tobacco products, electronic smoking devices, or products containing nicotine is now 21; it is unlawful for any retailer to sell tobacco products, electronic smoking products, or products containing nicotine to any person younger than 21 years of age,” even though Alaska state law lists the minimum age as 19.
