Jottings from late February and early March

March 3rd Read Across America Activity Day

All students earned an school wide activity day on Friday in the afternoon after exceeding their goal for books read during the month of February for Read Across America. Students were able to choose from ten different activities lead by the fourth and fifth grade Wagner teachers. They participated in two different forty minute activity sessions. Activities ranged from: trivia, cartoon drawing, dance party, card making, making book marks, paper plate weaving, K'nex, gym activities, Balto movie, and making a no bake dog treat.

WinterStar Farms visit

We were privileged to host Karina Burger and Tim O'Brien along with four of their Malamutes on Monday, March 2nd. All the students were excellent listeners during the speakers and picture show of all of dogs in action. It was exciting to see and hear the dogs that we will be learning about as the Iditarod race becomes the focus in our classroom.

Our focus in reading this week will be on the Iditarod, The Last Great Race. We will spend much of our days learning of the history of this event, as well as reading fiction books related to sled dog races. Be sure to ask your child about the Iditarod this week as they track their Iditarod musher each day in class. Due to the lack of snow and conditions in Alaska, the ceremonial start in Anchorage on Saturday was simply that, ceremonial. The official "restart" of the race began today in Fairbanks.

Mystery Skype

Our class participated in their first Mystery Skype with Mrs. Swenson today. Last week she gave them a lesson on how to run a Mystery Skype and today they did one for real. They Skyped with fourth graders in Darien, Illinois. They are very excited to do a Mystery Skype with me in our classroom. I plan to set up another Mystery Skype right after Spring Break.

A side note...

I wanted to let you know that I'm going to be gone the week of March 16-20 to have a minor medical procedure. My substitute will be Lynn Negaard and she is someone the students know very well.
