3rd annual Fall Festival
Fall Festival Adult Volunteers Needed!
- We need YOUR help! The OSS PVO is asking the OSS parents to sign up to volunteer and help at the Fall Festival on Friday, November 1st and Saturday AND/OR November 2nd. On Friday we need help during the day with receiving bake sale items at morning drop off, festival prep and starting at 6:00 pm with building one set up. On Saturday there will be donuts and coffee at 7am and you will receive a volunteer lunch voucher when you check in for your shift. Saturday has two shifts available plus early morning set up. If you are working the 2nd shift, come early to eat before your shift starts, the volunteer lunch room will close at 2:00pm. There is a ½- hour overlap to make sure that the post is not left vacant if the second shift is running late. We would appreciate any additional help for early set up at 7:00 am.
- Elementary OSS Parents, we also need coverage for the inflatables and have 4 (1.5 hour) shifts for each grade level. Please consider helping supervising one of those shifts so we can keep the inflatables open all day. These shifts have been added to the Elementary School Adult Volunteer sign up page.
- Also please consider donating to our Bake Sale. We are accepting home baked or store bought desserts to compliment our lunch menu. OCPS rules are listed on the sign up page and non perishable donations can be dropped off the Friday morning before.
All the three sign ups can be found on the same Sign Up page. Click on the tab at the top of the page that corresponds with your campus and please sign up for multiple times. The PVO appreciates your support.

Science Fair Update Week 4
WEEK 4: Science Fair Forms and Starting Your Experiment
Hello future scientists!
This week in Science Fair HQ, we will talk about forms to fill out in order to advance to the county and state-level Science Fair to represent our school.
First, let's start with a recap from last week. During the past week, you have developed a comprehensive plan (Research Plan) to strategize how you will be conducting your scientific investigation. Now, your Science teacher, or anyone else, is able to follow your plan, oversee the possible outcome or pitfalls and give you feedback. Based on the feedback you get from your teacher; you will be able to revise your research plan before you actually execute it to maximize the success of your scientific journey!
Next week, you will be submitting several forms to your teachers. These forms have been uploaded to your science classes with some pre-filled sections. Make sure to use the digital forms provided by your teachers. Turn in the signed copies to your teachers and keep a copy for yourselves. There are some useful videos on https://www.yingexpo.com/student-forms on how to fill these forms correctly.
These forms are a very important part of progressing to school, county and state level Science Fairs. There are also special projects that require pre-approval by the county before you collect any data. These projects are any project that involves the following would require additional paperwork.
- Humans (surveys, behavioral studies, etc.)
- Vertebrate animals
- Potentially hazardous biological agents (such as bacteria)
- Hazardous chemicals, activities & devices
Please make sure whether your project requires pre-approval or not before starting your data collection! If you have already received confirmation from your teacher to start your experiment, you should start your experimentation. As always, communicate with your science teacher if you need any help or clarification on the forms or other parts of your project. We are here to support you in creating a scien-terrific project that you will be proud of!
Best of luck Orcas!

30/30 Dismissal Rule
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
