Penguin Press News
The Week of October 15th
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear Laurel Park Families,
I hope this newsletter finds your families enjoying the cooler weather! Thank you for your flexibility, over the last few weeks, dealing with cancelled school days. We are very proud of our students and how they have managed to navigate through the changes brought upon by recent weather. Our Student Council collected Hurricane relief donations over the past few weeks. These items were packaged and distributed over this past weekend, benefiting those families most in need on our coastline.
If you were able to participate in our annual Bike and Walk to School Day, you might have noticed an increase in participation. Laurel Park family advocates, local leaders, and our PTA worked closely with the Towns of Apex and Cary to increase the safety of our school routes. On Wednesday, October 10th, we officially opened the new crosswalk on Laura Duncan Road. The Town of Apex will be providing a crossing guard as soon as they complete the hiring process. Team work really does make a difference! (see pictures below)

For Parents of Fifth Grade Students
We are starting to receive some information on the middle school registration process. Some of the leadership, magnet schools & early colleges (which may include middle school) have earlier registration deadlines than most of the other middle schools. Here is the information we have recently received:
Magnet, Early College and Year-Round Schools Fair - Saturday, November 3, 9am-12pm at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School
If you are interested in applying to the Wake Young Women’s or Men’s Leadership Academy, please contact Mrs. MacEntee (Tracks 1 & 2) or Ms. Waddell (Tracks 3 & 4) soon for additional information. The application period for these two schools is October 13-November 30.
Students and families are invited to
Laurel Park Elementary’s Annual Trunk or Treat!
When: October 27th 2:00-4:00 Where: Laurel Park Elementary
What is trunk or treat?
Trunk or Treat promotes a fun, safe environment for children and families to trick or treat. Kids can dress up in costume and trick or treat from trunk to trunk in the Laurel Park Elementary School parking lot. Parents, you provide the trunks and the treats for our trick or treaters by parking in the lot and handing out treats from your car trunk! This year we are encouraging alternatives to candy and food so that we can include all students and promote healthy living. Some “treat” ideas are pencils, erasers, stickers, tattoos, small toys, and glow sticks. We will also have games, activities, and voting for the best class pumpkin!
