4. The problem: Homework is overwhelming. The fix: Play the (temporary) role of homework monitor.

5. The problem: Your child doesn't know how to handle big projects. The fix: Teach time-management skills.

6. The problem: Tests are bigger and cover more material. The fix: Hone those study skills.

Grade 5 Language Arts

Fifth grade students learned how plot elements develop fictional stories. Students enjoyed favorite picture books and practiced identifying the essential parts to a plot. Students continued their study with flashcards. They showed off their creativity as they played charades, Pictionary, and adapted card games! If you're up for the challenge, ask your child for a round of a plot map flashcard game.

Grade 6 Science

The 6th grade science students put on their paleontologist (a scientist who studies the history of life on Earth through the fossil record) hats and debated the best location to dig for fossils. Using evidence acquired throughout their rock cycle unit, students created a claim, and then used reasoning to explain why their claim was correct.

New Gaga Pit

CDW is grateful to the PTO for funding the Gaga Pit, which completes our updated playground! We would also like to thank our Maintenance Team for building the Gaga Pit for our students to enjoy. The Gaga Pit will be officially opened during recess on Monday.

REMINDERS

OTIS-LENNON SCHOOL ABILITY TEST (OLSAT): Grades 5 and 6

This year, the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) will be administered to all Grade 5 students on Tuesday, March 21st and to all Grade 6 students on Wednesday, March 22nd.

The OLSAT assessment is designed to measure a student's cognitive ability, as it relates to abstract thinking and reasoning ability; however, it does not produce an IQ score. Although the data from the OLSAT will not be used for grading purposes, the results help to identify students who qualify for LEAP, our gifted and talented program, while also providing teachers with additional data points regarding student ability and performance.

If your child becomes eligible for the LEAP Program, the school will contact you at the end of August. Your child's OLSAT scores will be mailed home early June.

No special preparation is necessary for this assessment. We just encourage our middle schoolers to do their best!

Please contact the school with any questions you may have.

2023 CDW Yearbook

The CDW Yearbook will include Grades 5-8, in addition to highlighting our CDW Class of 2023. A form was sent home with your child(ren) on Monday, March 6th. Please complete the form, and provide payment of $65.00 (checks made out to "Charles DeWolf Middle School") to secure your CDW Yearbook.

All forms and payment must be given to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday, March 24th.

*A yearbook will be reserved for each Grade 8 student; however, yearbooks will be first come, first serve for students in Grades 5-7.

Whom do I ask?

It is important to remember that our school is full of staff members who are here to help you and your child(ren) all year long. In some cases, you may not be sure whom to contact for specific information. For questions about your child(ren)'s classes, please utilize the teacher as a primary resource before implementing the flow chart.

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

  • is nauseous or is vomiting.
  • has diarrhea.

The Nex-Trex Plastic Film Recycling Program is Back!

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

Please see the flyer below for more information!
