Keeping the Dream alive...............

That was so fast! It is my hope that the opportunity you had to self select professional development proved a success. I also hope that team time was productive and refreshing. We are in this together and for all the right reasons, FOR KIDS.

As we ease into mid-January, we do so with focus, knowing that we are at the mid-way mark and what we do between now and April will impact student achievement, but what we do each day impacts a lifetime of student growth. We don't teach to a test, we make meaningful instructional decisions, we mess up, we adjust and we grow----we grow ourselves and we grow our students, every day. We are growing together!

I hope that you were able to spend sometime on Monday, January 18 reflecting on the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I have the true date situated now (Upper)! For some reason I got that mixed up! Much like I did a few names during the assembly! #mistakes. If you can't make a mistake you can't make anything. Maybe you went to the parade, maybe you watched a documentary or maybe you reflected on your life. A Dr. Martin Luther King's quotes that resonate with me are:

  • The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

  • Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.

  • Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

The reason we selected this work is to serve, to make a difference. Know that each day you show up for kids you are making a difference! Have a great week ahead.....

Compliance for the week of January 19 ---- January 22

Focus walk for the week will be on Discipline (Indicator 2). Formal TLE Observations and Observation Conferences continue.

Student Supervision

It's class time, do you know where your students are?

It is VITAL that you know where your students are throughout the day. Students MUST travel with a pass. Our walk through visits have yielded turning students around without passes: students walking the halls aimlessly, playing in the restroom, running full speed down the hallway, dancing, etc. Our 5th grade team has a great system in place; student sign out when they are going to the restroom--this holds students accountable. If there is a need for a nurse visit, please send a pass. Never leave students alone. For more information regarding student supervision, see the Superhero Employee Handbook or the "Listen to Linda." If a discipline issue arises and a student leave the classroom without permission, contact your administration. The best way to ensure safety is to be informed/aware of your students whereabouts at all times.

School Wide Culture Walk

You will be completing a culture walk with your team this week. Just as completed at the beginning of the year. For clarify, your student survey data is personal, however the school wide culture walk is collective. This process allows us to collect information school wide to determine the health of our school culture. We look at several focus areas:

1. Student Joy & Engagement (active learning/high interest)

2. Student Discipline (systems for routines reward, consequences)

3. Classroom Physical Space (free of clutter/disorganization..a purposed environment)

4. Common Area Physical Space (free of clutter/disorganization..a purposed space)

5. Adult Tone (school appropriate/considerate and respectful)

This process is NOT evaluative in nature. You are asked to AVOID identifying the name and classroom number of teachers during this process. You are only collecting data. Once the data is received, the team will identify trends/themes and select a rating from the Rubric again. Please remember that this process is a collaborative, we all make up the culture of Bell. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate. A sample of the capture sheet is attached, as well as the rubric. Everyone will have a visit.

Let's find out, are we a healthy learning environment?

Take a look at the tentative agenda attached for our Assembly Feb. 29, in what way could your class contribute in performance? Be Creative. Click the Link and sign up for a task; include the task detail and start preparing!
