Jews are the followers of Judaism
All about Judaism
Judaism is one of the biggest religions there are. The religion is monothestic (like Christianity and Islam). Jews, the followers, have Abraham as their common figure. Their holy book holds the totality of Jewish teaching, culture and practice. Jews celebrate, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, the Passover, and Hannukah.
Holidays
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year. It's when fasting begins. Jews coat apples in honey to represent a "sweet" new year. Another holiday is Yom Kippur. It's the holiest day of the Jewish year, also known as the Day of Atonement. Fasting ends on this day. The next holiday is the Passover. The Angel of Death is ''passed over" to Hebrews who were in bondage in Egypt. Hanukkah is the last holiday. It celebrates the miracle of oil lasting 8 days when only enough for one day in the temple.
Common Figure/View of God
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are monotheism religions. This means that they only believe in one god. The three religions also have Abraham as their common figure (picture to the right).
Central Teachings/Beliefs
Jews believe in many things. One of their key beliefs is Shabbat. It's a holy day that goes from Friday evening to Saturday evening. Another is to follow God's laws. This includes the 10 Commandments. These 10 beneficial laws were given by the Creator God to show Jews how to live a better life now and please God forever. Lastly, Jews believe justice emphasized--God considering all people equal.
Mitsvah (Sacrament)
Mitsvah is a Jewish sacrement. The ceremony marks reaching the age of majority (age 13).
Eating Habits (Sacrament)
Some Jews only eat Kosher foods--no pig, shellfish,or mixing of milk and meat products.
Worship Leader
The worship leaders are called Rabbis. They are the teachers/guides of Torah.
Place of Worship
A Jew's place of worship is a synagogue. This is the inside of one.
Holy Cities/Places
For Jews, the Western Wall (sometimes called the Weeping Wall) is their common holy site. It's located in Jerusalem, which is their common holy city.
Holy Book
Their holy book is called Tanakh, or Torah. Torah means instruction / teaching. It is the central reference of the religious Judaic tradition.
