January 2018 Newsletter

Dear Bloomingdale Families,

The month of December was certainly busy here at Bloomingdale Elementary school. We hosted our annual holiday concerts and art display. We continued to offer Yoga and Math club after school. The Parent’s Club opened up its “Workshop” doors so our students could participate in Holiday Giving. Our 3rd-5th graders took a trip to the Civic Center for some skating, while students in grades K-2 celebrated with sledding and hot cocoa. We learned and shared the character traits of Kindness, Humility, and Self Control. There was an abundance of cheerful music, crafts, and activities to keep everyone joyful and engaged here at school.

I am excited that our days are getting longer once again, in spite of the long winter that still lies ahead. As we approach the halfway point in our school year, this is a good time to remind families of the importance of regular attendance. Not only does research indicate a direct relationship between attendance and academic success, but the state is now holding school districts accountable for student attendance under the regulations of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Regular attendance helps to ensure your child’s success in school and also helps develop the life skills of reliability, work ethic, and commitment that are sought out by employers.

As we enter the new year, we are reminded of the opportunity for a fresh start. If the first half of the school year did not go as well as your child had planned, now is the time for them to recommit to doing their very best each day. Ask your child what they can do today to ensure that tomorrow is a better day. Remind your child that they can always pick themselves up and try again. Help them build resilience and believe in the promise of a better tomorrow. The choices, decisions, and actions they make today will shape their future. We began the school year by asking students to own their future - the new year is an excellent time to recommit to that goal.

Happy New Year everyone!

Winter Weather

Winter weather is changing daily, but please have your child dressed for cold weather every day. We go outside except for extreme cold or torrential rain. Your child needs to be in boots, ski pants, coat, hat, warm mittens and scarf (if wanted). It helps when everything is labeled since we have dozens of the same color ski pants or mittens left daily in our lost and found area. Also, it helps the teachers return the lost items in a timely manner. Please teach your child to be responsible for his/her own items, and also teach them how to button/zip/or fasten their own clothing since the outdoor monitors freeze their own hands trying to help everyone.
