what years were you in middle school (7-8 grade)? example ; 1979 -1982.
What kind of music, movies, and fashions were popular at the time?
The kind of popular music at that time was africacn soga and James Brown soul music, "Say loud, I am black and proud"; " feel good", etc . The movies that were popular: West Cowboy, Mexican fold rush and detectives. The famous fashions in pants were the "Hipster pockets with wide bottom, and the "Tom Jones collard shirts, neat fits" and "Afro hair".
What were your favorite activities in middle school? What were your hobbies and interests?
Grandpa's favorite activities in middle school were playing soccer, singing in the band and farming. His hobbies and interests were reading science, history and English because he wanted to be a good public speaker and defending friends who are taken advantage of.
What job/interests/activities do you have now? Is there a connection between what you like back then and what you enjoy today?
Grandpa is now minsiter of the gospel and works with many families, teaching, counseling and preaching. This is a common connection between what he liked
then and what he is doing today . He is still speaking in public to people about their salvation.
What was the best part about being in middle school?
The best part about being in middle school at that time was that you were respected in society and you had a feeling of looking forward to a promising future.
What was the worst part?
The worst part about being in missle school at that time is that you certainly do not know a lot to get a good job and even though the future looked promising, nothing is promised to you.
How would you describe your middle school self? Example: shy, funny.
In middle school, grandpa was active, well dressed student and student leader in all of his classes.
What advice about growing up would you give to kids my age?
To quote grandpa, he said, "The only thing on earth that is for you alone and the only thing you take with you when you die is education/what you learn is yours forever." He said further, "take advantage of every opportunity to learn and respect yourself and respect others, no mattter who and they will certainly respect you also."
What was it like during your time in terms of home entertainment (TV, radio, electricity, computer, etc) ?
During my youthful time, color televisions, computers, cellphones, and electricity were not available in most parts of the country.
I was told that many of you knew only one president. Is that true?
Yes, that is true. The only president many of us knew was President William V.S. Tubman who led the country for 27 unbroken years.
