What Is Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose intolerance means the body cannot easily digest lactose, a type of natural sugar found in milk and dairy products.
What Causes Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose intolerance occurs when your small intestine doesn't produce enough lactase to digest lactose. A lactase deficiency is the most common cause of lactose intolerance worldwide. Lactose intolerance can be genetic.
How Can It Be Treated?
Changing your diet is the most beneficial way to treat lactose intolerance. Caplets and tablets of the lactase enzyme are available to take as well. Some people can slowly increase the amount of dairy products until they are able to tolerate them without developing symptoms.
