Southview Elementary
November 2023 Newsletter
Greetings from Ms. Denure
Greetings Southview Families!
Welcome to November! As our weather changes and shifts, please know that if your child or children have a need for winter apparel, please reach out to the classroom teacher and s/he will work to get your child or children what is needed.
We look forward to inviting you to Southview for our Fall Parent Teacher Conferences on Monday, November 6 or Thursday, November 9. Please be sure to sign up for a conference, either in person or virtual, if you haven’t already. The brochure shared with you will help you to be prepared for your time with us. This year we will be using a similar reporting format during conferences for all grade levels. So, if you have students in multiple grades, we hope the new format makes reviewing the information regarding your child(ren) easier and more consistent. During Parent Teacher Conferences we will also invite you to have your child(ren)’s school pictures taken.
November presents another opportunity for you to get involved with our PTO. We will be hosting our Annual Fall Craft Fair on Saturday, November 18 and could use your help to make that event a success. Please consider helping at this fun event by signing up to take donations at the door or to work at the bake sale - the shifts are just two hours each! Sign up here
With home and school working together, our students will achieve at high levels in academic and social/emotional learning. Thank you for supporting your child(ren) and our teachers and staff members. TOGETHER we can achieve great things for our children and for our community!
Respectfully,
Sara E. Denure, Principal
Attendance Review
The principal reviews school attendance monthly and contacts families if there are issues.
Elementary school families will be contacted in the following ways (phone calls may also occur):
If there are 3 unexcused absences in a semester, a Start Time Notification Letter may be sent. An unexcused absence is if the parent has not called in with a reason for the absence within 24 hours, or the reason for the absence does not meet the guidelines for acceptable absences as outlined by the district (see attendance policy).
If a student receives 5 unexcused absences, tardies or left early marks in a semester, then a 5 Day Truancy Letter may be sent.
If a student is absent more than part or all of 5+ days, a Habitual Truancy Notification Letter may be sent via certified mail. The school team will complete an assessment with the student and/or parent and develop a plan with all parties involved at a meeting. A truancy referral may be initiated by the team.
If a student receives 8 excused absences, a Medical Concern Letter may be sent.
Principal may meet with students after 5 days of absences (excused and/or unexcused) to better support the student and family with school attendance. .
*THE STATE OF WISCONSIN ALLOWS ONLY 10 DAYS OF EXCUSED ABSENCES.*
For more information about the attendance policy, please refer to the student handbook online or request a hard copy from our office. These procedures may be used differently on a case by case basis (as determined by the principal, school counselor and school social worker).

Southview Directory
Each year our PTO puts together a directory for families to voluntarily complete that is shared with all families to use for setting up playdates, sending party invites, etc. We encourage families who are wanting their information to be shared to complete the online directory form below.
The directory will be shared with families a few times a year via Infinite Campus Messenger and DOJO.

WINTER HEALTH TIPS
Exposure to cold can lead to injury or serious illness such as frostbite or hypothermia.
Follow these tips to keep your children safe in cold weather:
Dress your children appropriately before coming to school. The air temperature does not have to be below freezing for your child to experience cold emergencies such as hypothermia or frostbite. Wind speed can create dangerously cold conditions even when the temperature is not that low.
Dress your child in layers so they can adjust to changing conditions from indoors to outdoors.
Most of your child’s body heat is lost through their head, so they should wear a hat, preferably one that covers their ears.
Mittens provide more warmth to a child’s hands than gloves.
Your child should wear waterproof, insulated boots to help avoid hypothermia or frostbite by keeping their feet warm and dry and to maintain their footing in ice and snow.
Tips on preventing and controlling the spread of Head Lice:
Avoid head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp).
Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes.
Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfect combs and brushes used by an affected person by soaking them in hot water for 5–10 minutes.
Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an affected person.
Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that an affected person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks.
Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the affected person sat or lay. However, spending much time and money on house cleaning activities is not necessary to avoid reinfestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing.
**You should examine your child’s head, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, for crawling lice and nits if your child exhibits symptoms of a head lice infestation. If crawling lice or nits are found, all household members should be examined for crawling lice and nits every 2–3 days. Persons with live (crawling) lice or nits within ¼ inch or less of the scalp should be treated.***

Volunteer Reminder
During the course of the school year parents/guardians will be asked to consider chaperoning on student field trips or helping in the classroom. It is important that parents and guardians know that, unfortunate as it may be, the School District’s liability insurance only covers staff, chaperones, and students on the field trips. It does NOT cover younger, non-student brothers and sisters whom parents or guardians might want to take along on the field trip. When you are volunteering, you will be responsible for supervising specific students and we need your attention directed to those students at all times. This means that we are NOT able to allow for siblings to attend school sponsored field trips or be with you when you are volunteering.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter. Finally, we do realize that parents or guardians who do not have access to child care may not be able to chaperone field trips.

What are you Grateful for?
An attitude of gratitude can help children find contentment instead of always asking for more, more, more. As a way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this month, consider making a gratitude list with your child. It can be fun and nothing is too small to add to the list!
Maybe you start with big things like family, friends, or health, and then realize the joy of the sun on your face, a smile from a stranger, or the opportunity to try a new skill. See how many ideas you can add to your list this month! You can even save the list from year to year and reflect on how your child grows in their gratitude as they mature.
We at Royal Credit Union School $ense are grateful for all of our Super Savers! We do a little happy dance each time we see students get excited about saving money and working to build strong financial skills.
Your Southview Royal School $ense is open every Tuesday morning outside of the cafeteria to help your child get excited about saving and helping their school. As our way to say THANK YOU, we will have a Tootsie Roll Promotion on November 14 and November 28! All savers who fill out the folded transaction slip in their pouch will receive a tootsie roll! Remember that Royal donates $250 to your school for every 500 deposits made.
If you would like to get your child signed up for our School $ense program, follow this link to get started to www.rcu.org/schoolaccounts. We welcome any questions about Royal School $ense. Please contact Rachel Orlovsky at rachel.orlovsky@rcu.org.
On-Site Chiropractic Care
November is the month of thanksgiving & gratitude. One of the things we are grateful for is to be able to provide chiropractic care in all 9 of the CFAUSD public schools & hear the amazing comments that students make about their chiropractic care.
One student shared, “I am always so tired on Mondays but after I see you I am ENERGIZED!”
Studies have shown that gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships. Thinking of at least 3 things you are grateful for every day and remembering to say thank you is a great mood-booster. And when thanking others, don’t forget to thank yourself, too, for all of the amazing things you do!
Happy November & Happy Thanksgiving! If you have any questions about chiropractic care for students please contact us at onsitechiroinfo@gmail.com.

CFAUSD Inclement Weather Closing Protocol
Winter weather can change quickly in Wisconsin. When winter weather strikes, we have three options for adjusting our days. Because we are approaching winter weather, I would like to take a moment to review our inclement weather options. As a school district, we determine whether or not our schools will be in session. It is ultimately up to the family as a decision-maker to determine whether or not their child(ren) attend(s) school during winter weather events. If schools are open and you feel it is best for your child to stay home, please call the school to provide an absence notification.
When winter weather is forecasted, we monitor forecast models frequently. A team gets up and begins testing conditions at 4:00 am to allow us time to check roads throughout our district so that we can announce any cancellations by 6:00 am.
Cancellation -- If we cancel, we will make this decision by 6:00 am. This means all schools, Head Start, Early Childhood, 4K Cardinal programs, after-school programs, and public use of buildings are canceled for the day. The school district buildings are considered “closed.”
Two Hour Delay -- If we delay, we will make this decision by 6:00 am. The school day starts two hours later than normally scheduled.
Buses run two hours behind their normal schedule.
No breakfast is served.
School lunch will be served at or near the normally scheduled time.
4K Cardinal is canceled for the full day.
Early Childhood is canceled for the full day.
Head Start is canceled for the full day.
After school programs and public use of buildings may still occur.
If a Two Hour Delay becomes a Cancellation, this decision will be made by 8:00 am.
Early Release -- If we release early, we will make this decision by 10:00 am. Elementary schools release at 12:00 pm; and secondary schools release at 1:00 pm.
Lunch is at or near the normally scheduled time.
Afternoon 4K Cardinal is canceled.
Head Start is canceled for the afternoon and will be released at 11:05 am.
Afternoon Early Childhood is canceled.
After school programming and public use of buildings is canceled.
We plan to communicate any weather-related decisions to you in the following ways:
Local TV and radio
District website, district social media (Facebook, Twitter)
Campus messenger notifications: email and text message
Weather cancellations are tough decisions because we realize that last-minute changes in the school schedule create inconveniences for families. We will take great care in each situation to use the information available to us to make the very best decision we can. We understand that families rely on schools to meet a variety of needs.
We will stay open whenever we are able to safely transport the children using our busing system, but if you feel the weather creates an unsafe situation for your child, please also know that we respect your discretion in making the decision you feel is best for your child(ren); i.e., teen drivers et al extreme weather conditions.
Please be aware that we monitor the weather closely in the winter, especially when school schedule changes are a possibility. Our number one priority in our decision-making is the well-being of our students.
