Educational apps used in K-12 settings

Introduction

In module 9, we discovered Mobile Learning (MLearning), which is using a device such as a tablet and apps to enhance and extend the spread of teaching and learning. Apps are an important part mobile learning. There are a large amount of apps available and at times it may be hard to know which ones worthwhile.


Here are five IOS apps and an explanation of how they can be used for Personal Mobile Learning

SpellBoard

What is it?

SpellBoard incorporates phonics and spelling learning into fun activities. This app takes the boring old drill of repeatedly practising words over and over again into exciting word searches, word scramble and missing letter games. The app also contains audio so that you can hear the word being said. It has a pen tool, so you can practice hand writing the word and quiz mode to test the vocabulary learnt.


How can it be used?

This app can be used to learn spelling words. The spell list can be customized by teachers, parents or students to the words that are needed to be learnt. The games that are created are great ways to learn the words without manually coping them out over and over again. The app can be used in any language and can be modified for any grade. This app is great to allow students to study vocabulary words anywhere and at any time.

Mathmateer

What is it?

Mathmateer is a mathematical game and app that applies math question into rocket ship missions. First you custom build your own rocket ship then fly is around space reaching different points that all contain math missions. The missions range in three difficulties, including math problems such as number to fractions and square roots.


How can it be used?

This app can be used to practice math. You can return to any mission and repeat it over and over again. This allows students to focus on one area if needed.

National Geographic World Atlas

What is it?

National Geographic World Atlas is like any regular atlas book but the mobile version with some additions. It is super accurate, has HD, can be used as a globe, contains flag information and facts on every country and capital city in the world. Other features include pins, that can be dropped anywhere on the globe and saved there and up-to-the-date weather of any location that you choose. It also has the latitude and longitude information.


How can it be used?

This app can be used to explore and discover all the countries of the world and their capitals. It can also be used to learn different countries, their location and the capitals. This app is great for social class and learning about geography.

Coaster Physics

What is it?

Coaster Physics is an app that applies the laws of Physics to a roller coaster that can be designed by students or teachers. The roller coasters can be designed in any way the creator desires. Students can view how speed, energy, forces and acceleration are manipulated at different parts of the roller coaster. The tracks can then be shared to friends.


How can it be used?

This app can be used to explain and demonstrate the laws of Physics. It can be used to explore the concepts and see how they apply to a roller coaster setting. Or can be used to explain and define the laws in the roller coaster setting.

Popplet

What is it?

Popplet is a board for ideas! This app is like a pin board where you can capture your ideas, sort them, share them with others and collaborate with others. It can include text or images that can be linked to each other an organized any way you like.


How can it be used?

This app can be used for brainstorming and mind mapping to plan projects and record thoughts. Since this board is for fast thinking it can also be used to save notes from a lecture or presentation that needed to be jot down quickly.
