Final Push of the 2nd Trimester
What an amazing Saturday. I was fortunate to take my kids to the mountain and get a great day of skiing in. The sun was out and the snow was true spring skiing. I hope you had a great weekend and were able to get outside a bit.
The trimester is coming to a rapid close on 3/13. That's just three weeks a way. Please be sure to have your grades updated. I will be communicating with parents about the need to double check Synergy and get their students to turn in missing work before deadlines come and go.
In The Know
Advisory Heads Up - Our advisory period this week has been extended to 65 minutes at the request of teachers to ensure there is adequate time to cover the material and answer questions. Please know that this change is in effect for this week.
New SPED Model - I wanted to get this out to you as soon as I could regarding an upcoming change to services at Churchill and how they are delivered with respect to Special Education. I want to make sure we are operating from fact not fiction. It is important that as adults we stay grounded with the truth and seek to understand when we have questions. I am very appreciative of staff that have sought me out to obtain accuracy regarding this new change. This email is an attempt to get in front of any misconception there might be. We will be discussing the upcoming changes with departments that will be impacted first (Math/Language Arts). We will follow up this conversation with Curriculum Council (3/3) so that there is greater clarity among our curriculum and PLC leaders. Finally, we will share the details of this change with all staff on 3/13 when we have a professional development day on 3/13.
Next year we will have two new additions to our building. The first is our life skills program that is returning from a long hiatus. I described this in out most recent Staff Bulletin. The second shift is focused on increasing our inclusion percentage of students who receive special services in general education classrooms. Not all departments will be impacted. At the outset the departments that will see changes or will be impacted will be Math and Language Arts. In a nut shell we will be increasing the number of SPED student s in specific sections of Math and LA. This will come with additional FTE and support in the form of co-teaching. What this looks like exactly is in development. Final decisions about curriculum, interventions, and supports are all to be developed with teacher input.
I share this because I want to make sure we are operating with the same information. I don't want teams walking around in the dark, confused, and/or frustrated. If you have felt this or are concerned that this information has not been timely, I offer my sincere apologies. There are many moving parts and we are navigating them as best we can.
Please stay tuned as we engage these conversations and begin building the plan.
