Main Conflict
Creighton is kidnapped
His mom arranges his kidnapping so he can go to America where is uncle is and learn how to be a gentleman/solider and to sober up.
This is important to the main conflict because this event sets up the entire book! There really would have been no book if Creighton hadn't been kidnapped!
The Amity is attacked by patriots and they set a new course to New Orleans
When Creighton and his uncle are heading to Florida, their ship is attacked by patriots under the command of General Arnold Benedict. They take their captive ship to New Orleans. Creighton decides to spy on the rebels since his uncle is imprisoned and since his uncle is the only way Creighton will be able to get out of the Colonies. This is an opportunity for information to be learned.
This is important to the main conflict because this event sets up Creighton's turn to the patriots. Had they not been attacked, Creighton might have remained loyal to the British and a drunk.
Creighton meets and gets to work for Bengemin Franklin
Even though Creighton is English, Franklin is kind to him. When debating about Creighton's future accommodations, Creighton gambles himself a job at Franklin's printing press. Over time, Creighton learns more about the humble Franklin and he gets to read some of his works. Creighton eventually learns to like, respect, and honor the man.
This is important to the main conflict because this event helps Creighton to learn about the patriots and learn that the battle lines are not drawn by two different views, but between life and death (Harry Brown). If Creighton had not worked for Franklin, he would have ran out of New Orleans the first moment he got and would eventually return to gambling and drinking.
Spain is going to attack Britan and Creighton is going on a mission
The mission is this. Creighton and Arnold are going to give false information to the British about rebel plans and in the process hopefully find out where Washington is. To make them believe them, Arnold is going to pretend to have switched sides and Creighton is going to pretend that he is still on the British side.
This is important to the main conflict because this is the climax of the story and this shows that Creighton has technically/officially gone to the patriot side.
The mission fails but Creighton finds his father sick but alive
Washington had been hanged before the rebels could get to him. The Spaniards had been defeated. The attack they were going to do failed. Arnold was wounded and had to have his leg cut off. Creighton goes back to New Orleans with his father and continues to work in Franklin's printing press with the help of the French girl Sophie. The rebellion is in deeper waters then before.
This is important to the main conflict because this is the ending of the book and the conclusion/resolvement of the story. Creighton is officially on the rebel side since he participated in their activities.
How was the main conflict resolved?
