Principal's Notes and Highlights

Happy Friday!

Our annual 'Grand' Reading event lived up to the hype. We had well over 200 grandparents, parents and special guests at school this afternoon. We are almost certain this was our biggest turnout yet. We average sixty cars in the dismissal line and there were only seven today. Mother Nature was kind and stopped raining just in time for the event to start and the school grounds were covered with readers. The Loichinger's grandparents traveled all the way from Oldenburg, Indiana for the event (photo). Thank you for making this event special for our children. I feel very fortunate to work at place that is supported by so many wonderful people.

  • We kicked off the Serve-a-thon Fundraiser (Information) at both Town Hall Meetings this morning. This is the only fundraising event for the school. You don't have to sell cookies, garbage bags or crafts. It is called a Serve-a-thon because we hope students provide a service in exchange for a donation. For example, a student might rake leaves for a neighbor in exchange for a donation. This year, our school we will be working with the Lincoln Central Neighborhood Foundation (LCNF) as our give back to the community for your support. It is important for children to learn the importance of serving others. Fundraising is a necessary evil to being able to provide our students with many of the wonderful experiences they get to participate in at school. Being able to fund the last day at Donner Pool, field trips, Husky Gram Drawings, buses for field trips, Passion activities, books and many more student focused events are funded by this one fundraiser. Last year, we had to change our last day plans due to weather and renting the Columbus Bowling Center, Yes Cinema!, and the Columbus Rock Gym cost almost three times what the Donner Pool cost. This was only possible to fund due to your generosity. All the information is included on the envelope and information sheet that is headed home today. All fundraising needs to be completed by Friday, September 21st. Thank you!
  • Next Friday, CSA Lincoln will be hosting famed scenic designer, David Zinn, at school. Have you seen the street art in downtown Columbus that features creatures painted by light poles or on sidewalks? Those were done by David Zinn. Thanks to the Linden Project and a financial donation by the Dorel Juvenile Group, David will be teaching our students how to create these cool designs using sidewalk chalk. In addition, he will be painting his designs around our school grounds for our students to enjoy for years to come!
  • Freestyle Friday- Different name, same game. Formerly known as Wheels Wednesday, students can bring their bicycles, roller skates, and scooters to ride during recess. This time will now be known as Freestyle Friday and students must wear a helmet. Our first day will be next Friday, September 14th and it will be every Friday as long as it is nice outside.
  • Spell Bowl Applications are due to Mrs. George on Thursday, September 13th.

Practices will be on Mondays from 2:45-3:45 pm in Mrs. George's room.

More information on when practices will start will be sent to selected members on Monday, September 17th. See attached application. There will be 8 competing team members and 2 alternates (10 members total). Students must be in 4th, 5th or 6th grade.

  • Cheer Tryouts will be after school next Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4:30 p.m. Information went home last week with students. Students must be in 5th or 6th grade. Contact Miss Moore (mooreh@bcsc.k12.in.us) if you have questions. All participants must have a physical on file with the office.
  • Trailblazers and Girls on the Run start next week! We have over 30 students signed up!
  • There will be a Boys Basketball Open Gym next Monday from 6-7:30 p.m. at CSA Lincoln. At that time, future open gym information will be shared. Mr. Shelby Brubaker will be the head coach. Students must be in 5th or 6th grade.
  • Mrs. Ashley Thompson will return as our Girls Basketball Coach. Open gyms for the girls will be determined at a later date.
  • The CSA Baseball Reading Challenge is a hit! Lots of students are reporting back on books they have read. Reading should be fun and not hindered by needing to pass an AR test to prove you read the book. Reading is our sport!
  • The LEGO Robotics Team had their first meeting this week (photo). They finished in the top ten at the State Championships last year. I gave them a pep talk yesterday and shared that we are excited for them and will fully support their journey.

Have a great weekend!

Big picture

Buddy Bench

After two years of waiting, the Buddy Bench finally found a home on the school playground. This bench is the culmination of a project that current second grade students completed in kindergarten. Bender Lumber was gracious enough to supply and build this bench. The meaning behind the bench is that if anyone is feeling sad or needing a friend they will go sit on the bench. It is the responsibility of other students to recognize that they need a friend or someone to talk with and go join them.
