Important Info & GT Open House

Welcome back to ORMS GT! We are so excited to have an amazing school year in 2020-2021 whether your child is remote learning or in-person learning. We are excited about spending the year with SEL (social emotional learning) in all GT. Every grade level will be doing the same curriculum to make it as easy as possible for our GT teachers and so the remote and in-person students get the same experiences. At the end of the year they will have a digital portfolio in Google Slides to share with you.

Reminder: advisory only happens on B days during 7th period for 98 minutes plus lunch. The Open House on September 15 GT was recorded by Blake Haygood, our district's Advanced Academic Specialist. You can view it below.

Another reminder: if your child is working remotely OR your child is working in-person please make sure they know their GT advisory assignments are to be turned in just like any other class. Per the letter sent home this summer, if your child doesn't participate in GT activities they will be placed on a growth plan. If no progress is made, they will be exited from the program. If you believe GT to be too much work for your child this year, please email their counselor and you can furlough from the program for the rest of the school year and hop back in next year or you can exit altogether. Thank you for your understanding!

ORMS Open House Website

To learn more about your child's GT teachers (or any of the teachers they have) take a look at our ORMS Open House 2020 website!

Every fall Jenna Madrigal, our UIL director for ORMS, works with the GT students to see what aptitude they might have for the various UIL Academic events. This year we are unable to do our UIL practice tests in the cafeteria due to overcrowding. However, if your 7th or 8th grade child wants to participate in a UIL Academic event, please contact the coach below or Ms. Madrigal for more info. 6th graders can't participate in UIL, but are more than welcome to attend practices in events they want to join next year so they can get a head start. Dates for competition are forthcoming.

All GT students spent the beginning of the year working on Canvas tips and tricks like every Advisory on campus, but then they moved into empathy lessons and skits and spent most of September having discussions with various scenarios and Circle Time in an effort to get to know one another and their teachers. They also completed a Google Slides presentation about themselves and presented it. They filled out personality quizzes too to learn more about their gifts and how best to use them in the classroom and beyond. Students also got to try out Stories With Holes by Nathan Levy, which are scenario brain twisters that really push students' creativity, thought processes, questioning skills, and thinking outside the box to find the answers. Students also played a game called Fishbowl to get to know one another better. The end of September and beginning of October will be all about self-care.

GT Evaluations

Monday, Jan. 6th, 8am

415 Oak Run Point

New Braunfels, TX

In January we will be mailing the first semester GT evaluations home so you can see what your child and GT advisory teacher have to say about their experience thus far this school year in GT. We will also send another evaluation home the last week of school in May. Both evaluations will go in your child's cumulative folder as well.
