Weekly Tech Update 2/1 to 2/5

Colleagues Challenging Colleagues

This past summer the WCSD offered several professional development opportunities for engaging students with the 5 E instructional model. The first of the 5 E’s is engagement. I was on my way to an appointment this past week when I stopped by Anne Ciscell’s room at the high school. Anne was showing me a strategy she uses to engage her students at the beginning of a unit. Anne creates animated Google Classroom banners that spark curiosity from students and is specifically themed for the unit they are about to begin. See if you can guess what they are about to read in Anne’s English class! Click on the image at left to watch the animated Google Classroom Gif she created. What a great example of a simple tweak to increase engagement!

Oh, the colleagues challenging colleagues title? Anne was quick to point out that she, and one of her department colleagues are always pushing each other to “1 Up” each other. You know who you are! Hopefully, I will hear from you soon so I can share your strategies that you use to help increase engagement with your students.

Blessing or a Curse

Having a 20-30 minute drive everyday to school, can either be a blessing or curse. What it does do however, is it gives me time to listen to fresh perspectives on education. Lately, I can’t get enough of A.J. Juliani’s “The Backwards Podcast”. Each episode focuses on an aspect of the backward design process for curriculum, learning, assessment, etc. If you don’t know who A.J. Juliani is, see the video below. Dr. Catlin Tucker joined A.J. Juliani not long ago for a webinar on “Teaching in the Concurrent Classroom”.

Teaching in the Concurrent Classroom

As previously mentioned, Dr. Catlin Tucker provided a webinar on “Teaching in the Concurrent Classroom” this past Thursday night. Dr. Tucker talks about the challenges educators are experiencing and provides 4 quick, and easy strategies that can benefit our students during hybrid and remote learning. This was far and away, the fastest half-hour I have ever experienced! It went quick! Click here to access Dr. Tucker’s site. While you are on her site, feel free to sign up for her newsletters and updates. She is always sharing great resources.

I was with a friend earlier this week, and I was telling her how I wait for my Chromebook to not function properly before I check to see if it needs an update. Like many, I just close the lid and don’t power it off so it can update automatically. That is when she SMACKED me with ‘Eat your own dog food Saint’. I laughed, I have never heard that one before!!! It was great🤣. BUT IT DID get me thinking about more than updating my Chromebook. It got me thinking about the assignments that I assigned, and how many times I actually did them before I assigned them to the students. 🙁

Don’t Wait, Update!

Keep those devices up to date. If something isn’t working like it ‘normally’ works, then check to see if you need an update. If you are on a Chromebook, don’t just close the lid, power it down and restart it. If you are on a desktop or laptop, check your Zoom every now and then to see if you need an update. To do this, find the Zoom app on your desktop or laptop, sign in and click on your profile picture located in the upper right. “Check For Updates” will be an option for you once you click on your profile picture.

Get Stuff Done Club & InstaStrategies

The Get Stuff Done Club will hold two, one-hour zoom sessions, every Wednesday from 12 to 1 and then 1 to 2. If you can not attend at those times, the sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the Empower site. Every Wednesday will be a quick demonstration of an educational strategy from one of four popular educational books. The format of each session will be a quick demo (15 minutes or less) followed by Q & A and collaboration time.

1st Wednesday of the Month - Feel The Rush (EDrenanline Rush)

2nd Wednesday of the Month - Don't Kill the Wonder (Ditch That Textbook)

3rd Wednesday of the Month - What's the Protocol? (EDUProtocols)

4th Wednesday of the Month - What's the Play Coach? (DL Playbook)

To join the meeting this Wednesday, click HERE for the 12 o'clock session or HERE for the 1 o'clock session, or email me and I will send you the Zoom link directly. If you would like, you can register for each session below, and I will email you the link on Wednesday so that you don't have to search very far for links. See registration buttons below.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you are signed in with your district Zoom account or you will not be admitted from the waiting room. Sorry, I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

There are many tools and options available for us to use at WCSD to accomplish what we intend to accomplish. Most of us know by now that we can not directly put a pdf into a Google Slide. Or can we? Although we could probably accomplish the same thing with a document camera, or Kami, sometimes we might not have access to those tools. So a quick and easy way to convert a pdf to jpg, is through pdf2jpg.net. This is a neat trick to keep in your toolbox, especially if you would like to read a couple of pages to your students, or set backgrounds in Google Slides that students can not manipulate.

WCSD Informational Technology Website

The Informational Technology(IT) department is establishing a ticketing system to streamline the process of tracking technology issues. The ticketing system can be found using this link. (https://sites.google.com/watertowncsd.org/informationtechnology/home). This should be a website that you bookmark in case you need to reach out to the IT department.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first 4 months! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged
