The US had their boats waiting in the harbor for the Spanish. The spanish came and the US started firing. The US boats were made better they were bigger, newer, and stronger.
The US won because their boats were better.
It showed other countries that the US had a strong navy. We took out their whole fleet and the US boats did not have much damage. It also showed we were a strong starting country.
