LIECK REUNITED! Parent Edition
September 2021
INSTRUCTIONAL SCHOOL DAY: 7:45 A.M. - 3:10 P.M.
Message from the Principal
First and foremost, thank you parents for a very successful first week of school. We hope your children are getting better adjusted to the routine and excited to come everyday! As I walked around the campus, I observed students practicing routines as procedures, but above that, they were socializing, laughing, creating classroom community relationships, and contributing to the overall classroom dynamic. We also could also see students getting to work, writing assignments, math review and diving back into the love of reading. Pretty awesome sights to see! Our students give us the hope that they will rise up and get past any adversity this year might bring. I am already so very proud of them and it has only been one week of school!
To assist you in understanding our instructional programs and expectations, we encourage you to join us for our PTA/ Parent Orientation Day 1 Wednesday, September 8th (ALE, PreK, Kinder, 2nd & 4th & GT) & Thursday, September 9th (1st, 3rd & 5th & GT) from 4:30-6:15 PM. (The 1st session will be from 4:30-5:15pm and the 2nd session will be from 5:30-6:15pm.) We hope to see you there as to better support your child and their progress in school.
Unfortunately, we have had a couple of identified positive cases on campus this past week, but through the assistance of our nurse (conferring with NISD Health Services and Metro Health) and our outstanding custodial crew, we are able to work quickly to inform our families and keep our students safe. Nurse Kristyn Gonzales worked directly with families whose child has tested positive or was deemed a close contact and informed them about quarantine and safe return protocols.
Last year, when there was a positive case on campus, we sent out a campus-wide notification letter. This year will be a bit different, where the letter may go to the classroom or grade level depending on the situation.
We commit to our teachers and custodial staff to continue their frequent thorough cleaning, sanitation, and safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among our students and staff members. We are continuing to do our very best with health and safety protocols. Keeping my staff and students safe is my TOP priority.
Parents, if your child is displaying any symptom of Covid-19 we urge you to keep your child home and seek medical guidance. Lieck Elementary is a Rapid Testing site for Lieck students or staff who become symptomatic while here at school, parental consent is REQUIRED.
It really does take everyone's help in keeping our school a safe place to learn. There is no other place I would rather have our students be, but in our classrooms learning at high levels in person!
Thank you to all of our Lieck families for your support in making the start of the year a GREAT so far! We are STRONGER TOGETHER!!
Respectfully,
Ms. Jessica Garza
Principal

After School Dismissal Groups
Here our the ways that students are exiting the building:
Parent Pick Up: this group of students are students whose families are driving in their cars to the front of the school and are remaining in their vehicles. As a courtesy reminder please pull your car forward to the next vacant spot in line so that we can bring your student(s) to you in order to keep the line moving quickly and efficiently.
Front Walker: this term actually refers to two groups of students. This is the group of students that exit the building at the front of the school near the art room. This group of students consists of students that are walking home alone or with siblings from the front of the school AND the group of students whose families that walk to the school to pick up their child.
Back Walker: these are the group of students that gather on the backside of the school and enter the crosswalk with Ms. Doris the crossing guard, we are aware that many parents are walking to the back area and meeting us in the back (near the bike racks) please note that while you are physically meeting your child we refer to them as a Back Walker. This has created some confusion with students as we have multiple groups going in different directions this year.
Bike Rider: these students exit the building with the "Back Walkers" and go to the cross walk with Ms. Doris. Students are expected to walk their bikes until safely off the property.
Bus: Students are assigned to a specific bus (exiting and departing from the bus loop)
Learning Tree: Students are picked up by Learning Tree staff and are escorted to the cafeteria or classroom meeting area.
Day Care Programs: Students are escorted by a teacher down to the breezeway at the bottom of the hill (exterior cafeteria doors) where they are released to the Day Care or After School Program.
-From the Clinic, Nurse Kristyn Gonzales-
- In the event we are made aware of a positive case on campus, the student or staff member is safely and quickly transferred from their location to the Isolation Room where the nurse attends to the individual's needs and prepares the child or adult for pickup. The classroom or specific location then undergoes a thorough cleaning/disinfecting protocol by our custodial staff.
- Nurse Kristyn with assistance from an administrator, will then perform contact tracing and identify close contacts. A close contact is considered to be individuals who are within 3-6 feet of each other with either individual not wearing a face mask. If your child is a close contact, the family will be notified by phone with that information. General Covid notification letters may be sent to families via School Messenger by grade level or classroom depending on the situation.
- If a student is sent to the clinic with symptoms of Covid-19, Nurse Kristyn is able to administer a nasal swab Rapid Test with written PARENTAL CONSENT. Please see information below.
More Information about Covid-19 Rapid Tests
Dear Lieck Parents,
We are committed to doing all we can to keep staff and students healthy and safe. With this goal in mind, we are pleased to share that we will be taking part in a statewide program offering rapid tests for use in schools. This program will allow NISD to test symptomatic individuals and reduce the risk to our school community. This offers further information on the tests and the testing program. If you wish to have your student participate a permission form will be available in the front office. If you have additional questions, you can contact Kristyn Gonzales, RN, school nurse at kristyn.gonzales@nisd.net or 210-398-1459.
- What COVID-19 tests are used in this program?
This program uses BinaxNOW tests, which provide results in 15 minutes and are administered using a nasal swab in the front area of the nostril. If your child’s test results are negative, but they are symptomatic, a medical evaluation with an alternative diagnosis and/or negative PCR test is still necessary if you wish to have your child return to school prior to the 10 day isolation period.
- Who will be tested?
With parent permission the test will be administered to an individual who is experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 and attending school for in person learning.
- How will the information from the tests be used?
If a parent has given permission for Lieck Trained Staff to administer the BinaxNOW test for their child, your child’s school will call you to let you know that your student is experiencing symptoms and that they will be administering a BinaxNOW test. The test administrator will also call to share the results after the test has been administered.
The results will also be shared with NISD and with the local health department to allow for public health reporting and contact tracing and to determine the stay-at-home period for individuals who test positive. Additionally, the total number of positive tests per school will also be shared with the Texas Department of State Health Services as is required by law.
NISD HEALTH GUIDELINES
NISD will continue to follow the recommendations and guidance issued by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) as well as local public health guidance. We anticipate changes and modifications will continue throughout the school year in order to provide the safest situation possible for our students, families and employees.
- As we head into the 2021-2022 school year, the changing health metrics are closely monitored. District plans include a continued emphasis on sanitation and cleaning of all facilities and physical distancing when possible. Likewise, we may not compel an individual to disclose whether or not they have received COVID-19 vaccinations.
- Routine and frequent cleaning and disinfecting will continue. Frequent handwashing will also be encouraged with hand sanitizer available for students and staff.
- In the event of positive cases of COVID-19, we will follow recommended CDC guidelines for contact tracing and quarantining. We continue to monitor local health conditions and any changes to these guidelines will be communicated.

Thank you families for always making Lieck a GREAT place for our students!
While one-on-one communication is the best, in a district as large as Northside ISD it is sometimes difficult. Because we want our parents to stay informed, NISD has several ways that parents and other interested citizens can stay informed about the successes and challenges of San Antonio’s premier school district of choice, as well as find out news about their children’s schools.
