Getting to Know Your Gifted Child
2019-2020, Edition 2
Too intense… Too much…. Too sensitive...
Have you used these words to describe your child? Think about the last time you had to leave the house at a set time? Your one child may be complaining about the seams in his or her socks or preoccupied with creating an animated scene with their stuffed animals. One child may be oblivious to the fact that their clothes have been put on backwards. While another is anxious and getting upset trying to get everyone out the door, so he won’t be late for school.
These are a few examples of overexcitabilities. Studies show that overexcitabilities are more prevalent in gifted students and should be nurtured not cured. This article will help you to better understand overexcitability, identify the dominant type and will give you strategies for nurturing their gift. Consider the possibility that your child’s intensity is a sign of their enormous creative potential.
