Staff Memo
Feb. 20, 2016
As I've listened to conversations around HSE21 and what it is/means, I keep hearing the words "problem solving, multi-step problems, and critical thinking." Defining HSE21 is not easy because it forces us to think outside the square. It forces us to think across disciplines. It forces us to imagine possibilities we haven't imagined before.
And while all of this might seem overwhelming sometimes, as I listen to our conversations, I feel very confident we are up to the task. I know we won't "figure it out" over night, but I do know we'll figure it out. By bravely and openly talking about our successes and fears, we will continue to find ways to help our learners be highly engaged in solving problems. Don't be afraid to deconstruct structures that don't seem to align with HSE21. Don't be afraid to make changes when you know what is happening isn't best for kids.
Be brave, folks. Share your successes. Talk about your failures. By thinking outside the square, we will go far. And as Sean would say, "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!"
What can we do to make sure our kiddos who are introverts feel successful?
HSE21 IN ACTION!
The clip below illustrates how technology can meaningfully amplify literacy instruction. In addition to their traditional Reading and Writing Workshop work with book making and small group reading conferences, students maintain organized electronic folders for their quick work at literacy stations.
· Audio Books: build background on a topic or model reading fluency
· Phonemic Awareness: reinforcement through game play
· Building Word Families: application of a word pattern to other words
