News and Notes for Teachers- March 12
Dear Staff
I am appreciative of the hard-working dedicated staff at SMMS. Last week was classified appreciation week but we appreciate our classified staff every week. They are amazing. It's hard to express without sounding cliche but we are very lucky here.
I know we are working hard to help students manage their behaviors and focus on learning. It can feel very challenging and frustrating sometimes but our efforts do eventually pay off for even our most resistant learners.
Students need constant reminders of expectations and positive reinforcement. This will be a challenging week for all of us. Let’s keep calm for the sake of our students. They are lucky to have you as their teachers. Have a great week.

Letter to Parents about Safety
In addition to the letter Mike Scott sent out on Friday to parents,

I, along with the other MS principals, will be sending this letter out Monday evening to our parents.
Dear Parents/Guardians of HSD Middle School Students,
As you may know, almost one month ago a violent situation occurred in a high school in Florida. This event has resonated with many students in our country. We have recently become aware that in our middle schools it has also become a topic of student conversation and possible student action. During the past week we have heard that on March 14 (Wednesday) students may stage a “peaceful 17 minute” walkout in response and reflection of the events in Florida. As part of their constitutional right, students may stage a peaceful walkout as long as it does not create a significant disruption to our schools.
As principals, we have been in discussion with our district office, school safety supervisors, Hillsboro Police and our school staff to develop a plan to help out students and address this situation if it occurs. Our first priority is the safety of students but also to help our students understand who they are and understand their voice as they navigate the very complicated world that they are living in.
We also believe that students in our middle schools are also very connected amongst the four schools either in person or social media, so our response and action will be very similar but not exactly the same. We recognize that feelings and thoughts may occur during or after this possible walk out which can cause stress and emotion for our students. Administrators and counselors will be able to have conversations to help students process these thoughts and feelings if needed. Our instructional day will continue during and beyond this possible event.
This is also a good opportunity to have conversations with your student at home about the events in Florida and conversations happening nationally with our schools. Students at this age often have started to develop their own opinion and voice but may not be able to use it as well as they would like. We strongly suggest having conversations with your student on what they think and feel about this subject and questions they may have about it as well how to use their voice.
Please refer to Superintendent Scott’s letter which was sent out last week for additional details.
Sincerely,
Mr. Roger Will Mr. OJ Gulley Mrs. Mary Mendez Dr. Jon Pede
