"Our WHY" Focus of the Week: A Safe Place for Students and Staff
An excerpt from "Turning High Poverty Schools Into High Performing Schools"
To learn, children and adolescents need to feel safe and supported. Without these conditions, the mind reverts to a focus on survival. Educators in high-performing, high-poverty schools have long recognized the critical importance of providing a healthy, safe, and supportive classroom and school environment. At Port Chester Middle School and other HP/HP schools, this means all forms of safety and security while at school—food if hungry, clean clothes if needed, medical attention when necessary, counseling and other family services as required, and most of all caring adults who create an atmosphere of sincere support for the students' well-being and academic success. When students who live in poverty experience comprehensive support that works to mitigate the limiting, sometimes destructive poverty-related forces in their lives, the likelihood for success is greatly enhanced.
One of the things I am most proud of at Ebinport is that our teachers truly care about children! There are so many unsung heroes in our building. Some of you may not know about the teachers who pay families electric bills, take food to families in need, write letters of encouragement when we know one of our families is struggling, visit sick children, attend ballgames when our children are playing and the list goes on and on! Please hear me when I say that these acts of kindness are so important to our children and are appreciated more than you could ever know! And, I want you to know that your safety and well being are important to me! If there is ever a time you don't feel safe or valued I hope that you will come and talk with me or find someone you can talk to! You are the MOST valuable resource in this building, you are a treasure and you should be treated as such! Thank you for all you do for our students!

RtI Clarification
If you are taking a student through RtI for behavior, please make a copy of the intervention plan and data collection sheet and place it in Catherine Hood's box. This is the "golden ticket" to have your student placed on Mrs. White's caseload.
Tier 2 and Tier 3 Intervention Plans can now be found at the end of the newsletter.
SIC Voting
A HUGE thank you to all teachers that were able to come to the SIC meeting this week. If you were there you got to see me "think of my feet" :)
At this meeting, we discussed the upcoming elections for SIC. Thank you to Christine Rasmusson for agreeing to represent 3-5 teachers. We now need 2 parents to serve on SIC. Traditional teachers, in the next few days you will receive a call for nominations. While this will go out to our families, please nominate a parent in your classroom that, if elected, would be willing to serve on School Improvement Council.
School Improvement Council is the principal's advisory committee made of teachers, parents, staff and community members. Administrators rely on this committee to help guide big decisions being made at the school level. For example, no birthday celebrations came about as a result of the SIC.
Helping Hands through CoolTable Information
Follow Up from Chris and Shante Kiefer (from our faculty meeting this week)
Runs first three weeks of each month:
• Week 1 for K-1
• Week 2 for 2-3
• Week 3 for 4-5
• Specials by appointment as needed
Three areas of help:
• classroom supplies
• hands-on classroom assistance
• take home projects
To request a helping hand during their week of focus, teachers will simply fill out the Google Form @
Although we may not be able to reach all needs each week, we will work to spread the love and bring on more volunteers if the need arises.
The teachers may also use the Google Form to request a tee shirt. They can just select supplies in the form, and use the description area to let us know their size.

Safety Committee Notes
Committee Goals and Concerns
· Shoutout to everyone for carrying their red bags and radios around the building and to recess. If you need any supplies for your red bag, please let Rhonda Cranford know as soon as possible.
· Encourage one another to work on Safe School videos. Our school gets money when everyone watches their videos on time.
· Encourage everyone to close and lock their doors when they leave their classrooms.
o This also applies to adults who have a master key who pick up students.
o Do not prop exterior doors open. Adults should have a key card to get into these doors.
o Continue to keep the stage door closed (across from Ms. Lake’s room).
· During fire drills, please make sure to use the closest possible exit.
o Take attendance as soon as you get outside. Showing your red card means you are missing students or have extra students. Showing your green card means that your students are accounted for.
o A Zone Zero voice is important for fire drills. We have to time our fire drills. Talking slows this process down and increases our time.
· Ensure that everyone has the essential information in their clipboards.
o Safe Seven cards (red and green cards)
o emergency numbers and rosters (for reunification)
o Emergency Care Plans and health issues from Rhonda Cranford
· We have an earthquake drill on Thursday, October 18th. Teachers and students will both go under their desks and hold onto the table legs.
