FROM THE PRINCIPAL...TONY WHITE

Living in this digital age is a blessing and a curse - primarily as it relates to our relationships. Social media can be a wonderful tool to connect with family, friends, and make new friends anywhere in the world. It can also become toxic, addictive, and isolating. Video on-demand services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube provide instant entertainment and exactly what we were looking for, but also can glue our faces to screens for hours on end without much conversation. Tablets and smartphones provide access to limitless media, and when you visit a restaurant, doctor's office, and everywhere in between, you'll see parents' and children's faces alike aglow from these screens...and not necessarily always saying a whole lot to one another.

My purpose here isn't to appear judgmental, but to point out the importance of children being exposed to language at an early age as we talk to them as well as to our other family members and friends around them. Studies show that the more language children are exposed to, the more their vocabularies and ability to empathize expand, and they are able to create more meaningful interpersonal connections because they have followed their chief language models - their parents/guardians.

There is a time and place for technology - especially as we teach our kids how to navigate the world around them. However, the more they hear us talk and have conversations with them, the more their communication and language skills grow. We see the results pay off in dividends in their writing, speaking, listening, and ability to make and sustain friendships.

Have a wonderful weekend, Norton Creek, and I hope you have fun engaging in conversations around your homes and neighborhoods!
