Dear Franklin Families and Students,

We are proud to announce that the Successful Schools Survey is here, and we want to hear from you!!

Each year the Portland Public Schools community has an opportunity to participate in the Successful Schools Survey. The results will be used to help each school understand the needs of your students, staff and families, as well as support the development of your school climate and improvement plans.

Survey window: January 27th - February 28th

Take the Family Survey Here

The Successful Schools Survey provides many benefits to our district and school community as it:

  • Is the only time PPS hears from students, staff, and families system-wide

  • Gathers data which will help PPS/FHS understand experiences at our school/s

  • Addresses school climate; which is a key component influencing outcomes for students

  • Enables us to see improvements from last year to understand how our work in schools has changed perceptions

  • Will be used as to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement

Our students will have an opportunity to take part in the survey in their English classes on designated dates provided by their teacher.

Successful Schools Survey FAQ

What is the Successful Schools Survey?

The Successful Schools Survey is our annual district-wide school climate and feedback survey. These surveys provide students, families, staff, and leaders an opportunity to provide feedback on their school’s climate and their experiences at school.

Who will be surveyed?

Students, families, and staff will be surveyed. Every student in grades 3 through 12 in PPS will be given the opportunity to take the survey. All families in the District will have the opportunity to take the survey regardless of their students’ grade level. The survey will be available in English, Spanish, Russian, Somali, Vietnamese, and Chinese. A school leadership survey will also be provided to building leaders.

How is this different from other surveys in PPS?

There are many district wide surveys that serve various purposes. The Successful Schools Survey provides students and families an opportunity to share their feedback about their school environment, learning environment, and their safety while at school. We do not have any other surveys for students that serve this purpose. The questions in the staff and leadership surveys will align to the student and family questions.

What will be covered?

For students, topics that will be covered are: teacher-student relationships, sense of belonging, school safety, school climate, engagement, cultural awareness, and diversity and inclusion. For families the topics included will be: school fit, school climate, barriers to engagement, and school safety. The SEL survey will measure: grit, growth mindset, self-efficacy, self-management, social awareness and emotional regulation. The staff and school leader surveys will align to topics in the student and family feedback surveys.

What is the timeline?

The current launch date for the Successful Schools Survey is set for January 26th - February 28th. The student survey window will be open for 3 weeks.

How will students, families, and staff take the surveys?

All student surveys will be administered online, anonymous, and not tied to students or teachers. Franklin students will take the survey during an English class period during the survey window. Families will have the opportunity to take the survey through a link that will be provided. School-based staff and leaders will receive the survey link via their work email. All surveys will be translated into PPS’s five supported languages: Spanish, Russian, Somali, Vietnamese, and Chinese.

What will be required of schools?

Surveys will be done electronically, so it will require coordination of technology. The survey should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Principals will provide time for staff to take the survey during the work day, however the survey can be completed at any time during the survey window.

How will participation be monitored?

The goal for participation is 50% for the family survey and 90% participation for students, staff, and leaders. This will ensure results are representative of our students and families. System Planning & Performance will provide weekly updates on response rates for survey coordinators and school principals.

How will the results be used and shared?

These data are longitudinal and, when paired with professional learning, will help inform PPS planning and continuous improvement. PPS leadership will facilitate professional development opportunities to train staff on how to use the data. The results will be available by Mid-April, which will support school and District level planning for the coming year. Results will be posted via an online dashboard. School principals, staff and school climate teams will be able to use survey results to communicate with families and staff about School Improvement Plans for the coming school year.

Franklin STRONG,

Chris Frazier

Keeping Students and Staff Safe During the Winter

We ask that all families and students be mindful of the PPS Communicable Disease protocols as we look to keep our students and staff healthy during the winter.

PPS takes these steps to ensure healthy school environments so that in-person learning can continue. In accordance with CDC guidance, we are also urging families to take steps to protect themselves and minimize the spread of communicable diseases in our schools. Such precautions include:

  • Keeping your student home when they are sick
  • Making sure your student gets a flu shot
  • Keeping your student up-to-date on the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters.
  • Masking - people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask
  • Washing your hands and avoiding touching your face

If your student presents symptoms of respiratory illness, including coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fever, or shortness of breath, please contact your health care provider right away.

You can also use the Self-Screening Tool to monitor symptoms or consult with your school nurse for your student’s return to school date.

The health and well-being of our students and staff is extremely important to us. We are keeping close track of the trends in our state and on the local level. PPS will continue to take all the steps necessary to maintain a healthy environment for our students and staff in the coming months.
