A Note From The Principal
Two new exciting initiatives are happening at CMES! Project Based Learning and Makerspace. I have provided two short videos that describe what each of these initiatives are within this article. I have been privileged to attend with our specials team the last 3 Wednesdays a training on how to implement Project Based Learning at CMES. In short, project based learning is an instructional approach that motivates and inspires students to learn while developing real world skills they will need in the workplace such as collaboration, communication, creativity, innovation amongst other success skills. PBL is different from the diorama or the salt map you possibly created as a kid because it is primarily completed at school, provides an authentic learning experience within the school day, students have voice and choice so they generate sustained inquiry and finally demonstrate what they learned with the community. The Specials Team which includes art, music, library, computer, and PE have developed a real world authentic collaborative project that will involve all of our fourth grade students. We will roll this project out in late March. Be on the lookout for our next newsletter for pictures. Check out this quick video and let me know if you have any questions. The possibilities of engaging PBL lessons are endless!
We are Makers! Our other initiative which will correspond with our PBL initiative is a Makerspace. The makerspace will be housed in our library beginning in 2018-2019 school year. The purpose of a makerspace is to inspire creativity and thinking outside of the box solution oriented students. We will be primarily funding this project via grants and our PTO, but if you have any resources you would like to share with us like Legos, or Keva Planks, or circuitry, any science/math inspired tools/toys please donate directly to our librarian, Sharri Ford. Wilmington Public Library has already offered to donate a robot that our students will get to explore within our makerspace! Below is a video that explains what a makerspace is, but if you google Makerspace there is a plethora of ideas and other schools already on the makers journey. I am sure you will be inspired! If you have an idea related to PBL or Makerspace, feel free to contact me or any of our specials teachers. Mrs. Molito,r our GIS, actually developed a PBL lesson where our students can research and propose what our makerspace will look like! I am excited for this opportunity for our students to learn in new and innovative ways!!

DAR Essay Contest
A group of about 20 CMES fifth graders participated in the annual Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest, along with other 5th graders in our region. We are so excited to have received the results!!
Aidan S. won 1st place & Hailey S. won 2nd place. They will be recognized on March 20th in an awards ceremony where they will read aloud their essays.
Working on the essay was optional and all the students that chose to participate were dedicated to completing a thoughtful essay that accurately addressed the topic: World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars.
So proud of these kiddos!!
Warmly,
