Elementary Fractions Instruction That Leads to Success in Algebra
In this article in Teaching Exceptional Children, the authors say that fraction knowledge is a stronger predictor of students’ eventual mastery of algebra than family income, family level of education, and overall IQ. “Thus,” they say, “bolstering students’ fraction understanding is a critical step in preparing students for algebraic thinking” – and this is especially true of students with special needs.
