Conferences coming: SAVE THE DATES!!

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on Dec. 1 & 2. You can expect to receive an invitation in the coming weeks and will have the chance to schedule the exact time then. We look forward to meeting with you.

Both online and in-person conferences will be offered. In-person conferences will be the default unless otherwise specified by the family.

Be ready when bad weather hits!

The weather is changing! That means it is time to check to make sure SPS has your correct contact information in case we have to let you know about a school delay or closure due to wintry weather.

ParentVue is our online system that allows all families, new and returning, to access and update their family and student information, including contact numbers, email addresses, annual health changes and so much more!

The correct contact information ensures that families and students are receiving all of the important information and notifications shared by their school, teachers and the district.

To find out about our procedures for coping with bad weather, check out this link.

Dental Screening and Varnishing

We will be offering dental screenings and varnishing from 8 to 3 on Nov. 21 and 22. If you have not already filled out a permission slip and want your child to participate, you can still stop by our office and pick up a form to fill out.

Too Sick For School?

When To Stay Home

Obviously being in school is important for all students, but there are times when your child should stay home in order to minimize the spread of communicable health conditions.

Please review the guidance linked here (English) (Spanish)

Join Our PTA!

What is the PTA?

Our Parent Teacher Association is comprised of parents/guardians of Mt Vernon students and Mt Vernon teachers/staff. Collaboratively they:

  • Plan fun and enriching events for our students,
  • Provide funding for student materials and incentives, field trips and assemblies, musical instruments, library technology, PE and playground equipment, and uniform assistance.

It's never too late to join! We have meetings once a month (attendance not required to join, and membership is not required to attend the meetings).

Meetings at 6 pm via Zoom on the following Tuesdays: 11/15, 1/17, 2/21, 3/21, 4/18, 5/16, 6/20.

Bus info at your fingertips!

The accident last week on Jasper Road before school caused bus delays on several routes. That can be frustrating if you don't know what is happening, but the district has an app you can download to not only track when your student boards or gets off the bus but the whereabouts of the bus, too. Check out the ZPass app on our district web site.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

To honor the work of an American who has been an activist since she was younger than most of our students, Nov. 14 is Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. Students and parents wishing to participate should meet at Volunteer Park at 7:45 a.m. This group of students, staff, and parents will walk TOGETHER to school at 8:05. If you and/or your child wishes to participate--wear purple and show up at Volunteer Park to join in the fun.

Students who participate will receive a grab & go breakfast and will be eligible to receive prizes. We will be learning about Ruby Bridges and her courage during our Monday Morning Meetings and in class before the big day! To find out more about how the recognition started, check out this video.

Positive Behavior Supports At Mt Vernon

Your clutter could be a fabulous prize!

Cleaning closets before the holidays? Have any gently used stuffies or other items? Our P.B.I.S. team is looking for prizes students can win in our Friday PAWSitives drawing. Children who have earned a written PAWSitive for good behavior during the week are entered to win, and each class picks a winner. Students are thrilled but keeping great prizes in stock is a challenge! If you have a stuffie in great shape to donate, you or your student can bring it to the office.

PBIS allows us to teach and reward positive behavior and create a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

What does P.B.I.S. Look Like at Mt Vernon?

We have adopted a uniform set of school rules. These rules define our expectations for behavior at our school. You will see these rules posted in locations around the school. Our unified rules, found in every classroom and non-classroom setting in the school, are as follows:

  • Be safe

  • Be respectful

  • Be responsible

  • Excel

How Families Can Help

Know the school rules, review them with your student often.

You are the most influential person in your child’s life. Your child respects your opinion and wants to please you. When you review the school rules and expectations, you communicate to your child that the school rules are important and worthwhile.

Get involved in your child’s school.

Whether it’s volunteering in your child’s classroom, in the Family Center, chaperoning field trips or special events, your participation MATTERS!

Studies show that:

  • Parent involvement at home and at school has a measurable impact on student performance in school.

  • Parent involvement is related to improved student behavior in school and an overall better attitude about school work.

  • Improved communication between teachers and parents increases student engagement as measured by homework completion rates, on-task behavior and class participation.

  • At-risk behaviors such as alcohol use, violence and other anti-social behaviors decrease as parent involvement increases.

Helping Huskies

We Need Your Help!

Throughout the year, students at Mt Vernon will participate in service projects within our community. Our first project of the year involves a partnership with Riverbend NICU.

As you can imagine, families with little ones admitted to Riverbend NICU are under an incredible amount of stress. One way to relieve that stress is to decorate the baby's space. The NICU unit is in need of craft supplies for this purpose. If you'd like to help out, please drop off any of the following items to Mt Vernon and we will deliver them to Riverbend.

  • Colored construction paper
  • Decorative edge (patterned) scissors for paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Glitter glue (no loose glitter, please)
  • Encouraging stickers
  • Origami paper
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
  • Decorative washi tape
  • Scrabble tiles
  • Adhesive foam shapes
  • Scrapbook paper

Additionally, an Amazon Wish List (<<--- Click link) has been created to help with shopping for these items.

Please note that these items do not have to be brand new. If you have gently used items, they would also be appreciated!

Thank you for helping our students help our community!!
