Writers Workshop Training
Writers Workshop is a model of teaching that we use to teach writing. Teachers begin with a mini-lesson that engages the students in their writing and a strategy to learn and apply into their writing. From the mini-lessons students move into independent writing that is structured and intentional. Teachers move around the room having individual and small group conferences and lessons with various students and then all come back together to share what they have learned while writing.
The model was developed by Lucy Caulkins from the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City. Many international schools across the globe have adopted this model and have found great success in their students' writing. You can find more information HERE. Our Literacy Coordinator will facilitate some parent workshops late in the year on our literacy program.
Warning: "Squid Games" on Netflix
There is a new show that has just been released on Netflix. If you have not heard, the premise of the show is adult players participating in kids games (such as red light, green light) to win money. However, in the show, players who are "out" or "eliminated" from the game are shot and killed. Other aspects of the show are also extremely violent and encourage violence to win the game.
This show has come up in PE classes already, anytime an elimination game (like red light green light) is mentioned or played. It then results in a lot of air guns and pretending to shoot people. When it comes up, our PE teachers are having conversations with students about the violent nature of the show and the expectations of PE.
This show is rated +18. Our young elementary students should not be watching it. Please help the school by talking to your child about what constitute violence, why it is wrong and why shows like this should not be watched by someone their age.
