What are we learning about this week? (WELCOME BACK!)
Language Arts:
We will be finishing up our Poetry unit this week. We will begin reviewing test taking strategies and tips as well as introducing our next unit, research.
Research is utilized in many aspects of our lives. It empowers us to seek new information and knowledge and promotes critical thinking. It allows us to deepen our understanding of the world, its people and oneself.
In this unit of study on research, students will be immersed in reading literary nonfiction (biographies). They will pursue information related to their personal interests as they generate a list of topics and questions to research.
Math: This unit provides a review of material covered earlier in the year, as well as opportunities to extend skills and concepts into work with larger numbers and bigger ideas. Early in the unit, students learn to multiply single digits by multiples of 10. That skill is then extended into building and sketching 1-digit by 2-digit multiplication combinations. Working with multiplication beyond the basic facts provides rich opportunities to review the commutative and distributive properties and tap into the power of the associative property of multiplication. Having worked previously with fractions as parts of a whole and distances along a number line, students are introduced to linear and area models that allow them to see fractions as parts of a set as well as a parts of a whole. These models include a ruler, an egg carton, a 12-foot strip of adding machine tape, and a circle graph. The unit ends with a foray into data collection, representation, and interpretation of data.
Please save your egg cartons for your math teacher. All math teachers need the cartons for a fraction activity.
Science: (We are starting our last unit in Science and it is integrated with our Social Studies curriculum.)
Earth Interactions Students will explore, investigate, and compare landforms found on Earth and the rapid changes landforms undergo. They will explore changes and interactions between humans and their environment including how people adapt, modify and use the physical environment. Students will explore and investigate natural resources and the impact of rapid changes to natural resources.
Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw
This month your child is learning how to use Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw- Balance feels best.
This habit focuses on students learning to take care of their body by eating right, exercising, getting sleep, spending time with family and friends.
How to Sharpen the Saw at Home:
I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, playing outside, and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends and enjoy their company. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I am always seeking to learn new information. I take time to find meaningful ways to help others.
1) Have a family game night.
2) Exercise together. Keep a health journal-Everyone sets a goal for the week.
3) Read together!
4) Make your own family club.
5) Serve others in the community
We encourage you to partner with us in teaching your student to practice The Seven Habits at home. To learn more about The Seven Habits and how they can be used at home, visit "Parent's Place" at http://www.theleaderinme.org/parents/
Homework
Spelling: No spelling this week! (Recover from Spring Break!)
Reading: Read 80 minutes and record
All Math Classes:
No Math homework just continue to study those math facts.
All PACE students should have mastered their timed tests 0-5 and 10's by now.
If you would like your child to challenge/have some math practice this week for your child. I encourage them to go to Think Through Math or Prodigy for extra practice.
