Here's a peek into the Art Room!
Hello! Would you like to know what’s happening in the Art room? We are all very busy learning, experiencing, and creating meaningful work.
Kindergarten have been introduced to the work of well-known glass artist, Dale Chihuly. You may have heard about him from your child or perhaps you have had the pleasure of seeing his work before. We have made clay vessels inspired by Chilhuly’s hand blown glass, and will soon be glazing and firing them. These will be a treasure to keep through the generations! I still have the clay pot I made when I was in second grade. Wow! That was a long time ago! 😉
First Grade is at the start of an Art history/appreciation unit. While studying Post-Impressionist, Vincent Van Gogh, we also learn about the Elements of Art: Line, Space, Texture, Color, and Value. The children will be creating their own landscape after being inspired by, “The Starry Night”, a very famous painting by this artist.
Second Grade continues the unit on China. We are working on our Still-Life drawings, which requires some higher-level thinking skill. We engage in concepts such as: depth in space, size comparisons, overlapping shape, positive vs negative space and shape. This work will offer opportunity to use some color media as well.
Third Grade students have developed their drawing skill in Contour Line drawing lessons and are now working on their final drawing. Have they told you about the bicycle? Oh yes, you heard right! Students are drawing a bicycle and are doing quite well. We will be applying the concepts of Value (an Element of Art), as we add color to our finished work.
Fourth Grade weavers are beginning to reach their goal, which is to fill the loom to the top! These weavings are breathtakingly beautiful! We are learning how to embellish by choosing the right type and just the right amount of decoration. I suggested that they give them all to me, but it seems they have other plans. 😉
Fifth Grade artists are coming to the point in their perspective drawings, where they are either applying color media, or shading with graphite. I cannot wait to put this work on display! Our children have worked so hard, have been diligent, had grit to persevere, and have produced some of the best work I have ever seen in all of my years of teaching. I am amazed!
Artfully Yours,
Anna Marie Carabellese
