From the Principal

Dear Saint Ambrose Parents,

I hope you had a restful Thanksgiving. Report cards are coming home with your child(ren) today.

We have embraced the first week of Advent at Saint Ambrose, Father Ben's homily at Mass on Tuesday invited us to reflect on how we sometimes try to fill a hole in ourselves with "stuff" that we think will make us happy, but that God wants to be the answer for us. 3rd-8th graders received the sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday during the parish Day of Mercy. Come Lord Jesus!

Please read this letter regarding registration for next year (also included below). I am grateful for the support of our Finance Council as we work for a balanced school budget.

Thank you for working with us with our drop-off/pick-up plans this year. We are constantly working towards student safety. Morning drop-off seems to be working well, and families are doing a great job waiting until 9 am before they let them out of the cars. We appreciate your help.

We have concerns about our afterschool pickup and are seeking help from logistics professionals to better manage the flow of traffic. In the meantime, we want to work on the parking lot.

Beginning Monday, December 6:

  • Kindergarten parents will continue to pick up the same way.
  • Grades 1-5 Parents who choose to park instead of going through the drive-up circle will pick up their child(ren) from the sidewalk on the east side of the main school doors. Mr. Whynott will be helping to direct people to meet their children.
  • Students in grades 6-8 may walk to the car without a parent.
  • Students in grades 6-8 with a younger sibling need to walk their younger sibling to the car.

Here is a link to a video describing our changes.

Stay tuned for further updates.

We have not yet found a school nurse for Thursdays and Fridays. We are interested in training a Health Aide. If you or someone you know is interested in working in the nurse's office 2 days a week, our school nurse will provide Health Aide training. Call the school office if you are interested.

Our Early Childhood is in need of an infant room aide or teacher. This is a full-time, 7:30-4 position. Please contact Anne Huber if you or someone you know is interested - 651-768-3032 or ahuber@saintambrosecatholic.org.

We are so grateful to Danica Rueb, kindergarten aide, for her amazing work with our students. Danica will leave her position December 17 to student teach next semester. Danica has been a gift to our school, and we will miss her. The kindergarten aide position is posted here.

Spirit Wear is available to order through December 18. We are still awaiting items from our first order. Thank you for your patience.

December 7 is the the Feast of St. Ambrose. We are excited to honor our patron at school on Tuesday.

Wait for the Lord, whose day is near.
Wait for the Lord: be strong, take heart!

God bless you,

Parenting in Two Moments: Discipline Strategies That Protect Your Connection

https://calendly.com/drjulesnolan/parenting-in-two-moment-discipline-to-protect-your-connection

We are always parenting in two moments. This moment, now, to manage the issue at hand, and at the same time we are modeling what our children will expect in their future relationships. When we discipline with a focus on the "long game", we are more likely to model healthy interactions and set good expectations. This session will focus on how, when, and how much to discipline, using concrete examples and techniques.

Handwriting/Letter Formation Tips

Research clearly supports that handwriting is essential. This helps build neural pathways in the brain. It also makes spelling and writing easier as it becomes automatic for students. Their brainpower isn’t completely focused on letter formation. Here are some tips to ensure students have strong handwriting:

  1. Consistently provide them with lined paper. The LMS has blank Groves Method paper. We recommend using this for writing activities outside of Groves Method time as well.

  2. Students benefit from editing their own work. Make them correct any backward letters or b/d confusion.

  3. Provide explicit narration and practice. If students are still struggling, this is a great skill to target during small group instruction.

  4. Provide pencil grips as necessary.

  5. Encourage parents to hold students accountable. We want students to use the same grip and formation at home so it becomes a habit.

  6. Incorporate multisensory techniques. Students can skywrite and deskwrite the letters. They can even use sand tables, shaving cream, and fun markers/colored pencils to practice letter

Employment Opportunities

  • We are in need of more substitute teachers, recess aides and lunchroom supervisors. Contact the school office if you are interested.
  • Our Early Childhood is hiring teachers, aides and high school helpers (3:30-5:30 pm-must be 16. ). Email Anne Huber if you are interested ahuber@saintambrosecatholic.org

General Information

Lunch - The USDA will be providing free lunches for ALL students for the 2021-2022 school year. First meal and milk will be free of charge. There is a charge for seconds ($2.00) and milk (.60) taken with cold lunch. Look for lunch account information in the back-to-school folder.

Even though school lunches are of no charge this year, if you feel your family would qualify for free and reduced lunch, we ask that you fill out the application. By filling out this application, Saint Ambrose receives funding and will benefit the family as well. Please print this application and return the completed application to the school office.

Communication from school:

  • Log in to Sycamore to update any changes to your contact information. Download the Sycamore Education app to quickly access lunch menu, calendar and other essential school information.

School Emergency Closing Notifications -

This school year we will continue to use our Sycamore System for text and email notifications for school closures and delays due to inclement weather. You may also check Kare 11 and WCCO for notification that District 833 is closed - if they are closed we will be closed.

Please look for a TEST TEXT and phone call on Monday, November 8th in the afternoon, from the school office.

Make sure to update Sycamore with your current phone numbers and emails as soon as possible.

VIRTUS Training Information for Volunteers

As we did last year, and in attempts to mitigate COVID, we will not be inviting volunteers into the building. While there will be exceptions to this rule, we feel this is the best practice at this time. However, we are encouraging you to go through the process so once we are ready to welcome volunteers back into the building, you are ready to volunteer should you wish to do so. VIRTUS Training

If you have not re-credential and have gotten an e-mail to that effect, or you know you have not re-credentialed in the last three years, you will want to do that here. Re-credential for VIRTUS

New Families

This section is dedicated to helping inform our new families about things that are happening at Saint Ambrose that they might not be aware of.

Would you like to volunteer at Saint Ambrose?

Although right now we are limiting volunteers we hope to be able to welcome parent volunteers back to school this year.

In order to volunteer you must complete the following:

- Virtus Training

- Background Check

- Code of Conduct

If you are hoping to volunteer in the future we recommend you to go through the process so once we are ready to welcome volunteers back into the building, you are ready to volunteer should you wish to do so. VIRTUS Training
