On Saturday, Hobart traveled to LaPorte to participate in the annual Dick Dearduff Classic ... an invitational where kids get to see some top-notch athletes without any team scores being kept. The Lady Brickies SLICED up the competition and performed well in their 2nd BIG meet of the season. Junior Addison Metts set a NEW MEET RECORD in winning the 100m hurdles by .01 seconds with a time of 16.17! Senior Elena Polizotto TIED the MEET RECORD with a 1st place pole vault of 10'6"!

After THUMPING the 59ers last week, Hobart welcomed Munster High School to the Friendly City on Tuesday and the Mustangs went home SADDLED with their 1st conference loss as Hobart won a close one 69-63! The Brickies got key contributions from all over the place ... none more critical than a 1-2 finish in the 3200m run by sophomore Bruce Leipart and junior Bryan Cherry that secured the WIN! Another highlight of the evening was the 4x100m relay team winning in THRILLING fashion as senior Wyatt Decanter looked to be SHOT OUT OF A CANNON as the anchor leg of the relay as he FLEW past the Munster runner on the home stretch to secure the victory!
Top performances for the Brickies included senior Devante Clemons (1st in 200 + 400), sophomore Bruce Leipart (1st in 800), junior Bryan Cherry (1st in 1600), junior Logan Reid (2nd in 1600), sophomore Julian Ruiz (2nd in 400), sophomore Zach Vode (1st in high jump), junior Jay Juan Rodriguez (1st in shot put), and sophomore Riley Johnston (1st place in pole vault)!

The Lady Brickie "Racketeers" were busy this week with a tough match in conference play and a potential sectional preview!
On Wednesday, the Merrillville Lady Pirates came over for some afternoon fun in a potential SECTIONAL PREVIEW. This one was INTENSE as these young ladies all knew what will be at stake if/when they meet again in a month. With #3 singles starter Emma Novak out sick, junior Neely Harpp stepped into the #3 slot and the Lady Brickies gave Merrillville all it wanted before losing 4-1 in a match that was MUCH CLOSER than the final tally. The #1 Doubles team of senior Amanda Cicillian and sophomore Ruthie Sutliff delivered the “W” for the Lady Brickies! All 3 singles matches were TIGHT ... which means the SECTIONAL should be EXCITING if these teams meet again! Sophomore Emma Lewis also had an impressive varsity debut playing #2 doubles!
Despite the 2 loses this week, girls tennis CONTINUES to show consistent improvement! These next few weeks will be key to helping them unlock their potential as they prep for post-season play.

Baseball
Hobart squared off against #7-ranked Munster at home on Tuesday. After junior Matthew Benton HOMERED in the 1st to tie it 1-1, the Brickies scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd and added another in the 4th to take a 4-3 lead into the 5th inning. The Mustangs responded and rallied for 3 runs over the next 2 innings and won a squeaker 6-4 in a game called due to darkness. The Brickies managed just 4 hits through 6 innings and just never could quite get it going despite being right there on the scoreboard with a chance to win. Junior Tyler Schultz and sophomores Bobby Babcock and Jaden Deel each had a hit for Hobart in the loss.
Wednesday, the Brickies traveled to Munster looking for a different result in the rematch. Trailing 5-1 through 4 innings of play, Hobart put the rally caps on and CHARGED BACK with 2 runs in the 5th and 3 more in the 6th to take 6-5 lead! Unfortunately, it was the Mustangs who again responded ... this time it was with 3 runs in the bottom half of the 6th inning to go back up 8-6. Munster shut out Hobart in the top of the 7th to close out the game. The Mustangs homered 3 times and pounded out 10 hits. Hobart finished with 7 hits as a team and DID NOT make an error after 4 miscues on Tuesday. Senior Ryan Earp carried the load at the plate as he went 3 for 4 with a HOMER, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
On Friday, wet fields caused a change in venue as the Brickies - originally scheduled to host Valpo - instead traveled East to take on the #6-ranked Vikings. Temperatures near 40 made it a cold night despite such a HEATED competition between 2 good teams. Valpo scored in the 2nd to take a 1-0, but Hobart fought back in the 3rd to tie things up. The Vikings were able to squeeze one in during the 5th that proved to be the difference as Valparaiso hung on to win a nail-biter over the Brickies by a 2-1 final score. Junior Jack Huber went 2 for 3 and classmate Tyler Schultz notched Hobart's lone RBI of the game. Freshman Ivan Balboa pitched well for 6 innings only surrendering 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 7 in the loss.
Saturday, playing their 4th game in 5 days, Hobart hit the road ... Ridge Road ... over to Portage for an 11 o'clock game. The Brickies jumped on the Indians early with a run in the 1st, but Portage tied it with one of their own in the 3rd. In the bottom half of the 4th, Portage got on the WARPATH and scored 7 runs to take a commanding 8-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Hobart BATTLED, but was unable to put together a rally of it's own to answer the Indian's run and lost another tough one 11-1. Freshman teammates Ivan Balboa and Marc Enslen accounted for half of the Brickies 6 hits in the contest and senior Ryan Earp doubled to score junior Tyler Schultz for Hobart's lone run.
Playing 4 games in 5 days can take it's toll ... particularly when coaches have to monitor how many pitches athletes can safely throw and stay within the rules set forth by the IHSAA - basically you need a lot of arms to navigate that kind of stretch! No rest for the weary as our guys face NCC rival Highland on Monday & Tuesday ... Brickie Up!
DON'T MISS HOBART @ RAILCATS STADIUM on MONDAY NIGHT as they take on the HIGHLAND TROJANS ... game time is 7:30pm. Tickets are STILL AVAILABLE in the Athletic Office ... ONLY $5 per person! BE THERE!!

Softball
Tuesday, #3 ranked Munster came to H-town for an afternoon tilt. The Lady Mustangs got on the board early with a run in the top half of the 1st inning. When Hobart came to bat in the bottom half, the 1st 2 batters hit the ball HARD, but the hits found Mustang defenders as opposed to gaps in the field ... so sophomore Saylem Smith took care of it herself by BLASTING a solo HOMERUN over the centerfield fence and tying the game at 1! Munster would tack on 2 more in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th get some breathing room ... and then finished off the Lady Brickies with 5 in the 7th to win 12-1. After the 1st, Hobart could only muster 2 more hits the rest of the way as the Munster pitching was overpowering. Sophomore Saylem Smith went 2 for 3 with the Homerun and Hobart's only RBI.
With Thursday and Friday rain-outs, the next opponent for Hobart was #7 Morgan Township on Saturday morning. The Lady Brickies got things going EARLY by scoring a run in the 1st to go up 1-0. Unfortunately, the Lady Cherokees responded with 7 in the bottom half of the 1st and then 3 more in the 2nd to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Hobart rallied for 2 more in the top of the 3rd to make it 10-3, but Morgan scored 5 over the next 2 innings to extend the lead to 15-3. Morgan's offense was hitting on all cylinders and the Lady Brickies just couldn't maintain the momentum from that opening inning - falling to yet another top-10 team.
Currently at 4 wins and 5 losses (all to top 10 teams), this week will be HUGE for our Lady Brickies as they look to get back on track Monday @ Merrillville. Weather-permitting, our girls will literally play EVERY day this week. It'll take determination, perseverance, teammwork and a lot of hard WORK WORK WORK! YOU GO GIRLS!
Good luck Ladies!

Boys Golf
Junior Devin O'Brien was the top finisher for Hobart with a team best 49. Junior Nathan Schammert shot an even 50 with junior DJ Lipke and senior Jacob Vode rounding out the top 4 Hobart scores.
Saturday, the Brickies teed it up over at the Portage Invitational. Playing a full 18 holes for the first time in competition this spring, Hobart showed improvement yet again with a team score that dipped below 400 ... an average of less than 200 per 9 for our fab four! Junior Nathan Schammert was TOPS on the leader board for the Brickies shooting a blistering 92. Senior Jacob "The Brick" Vode was next as he cracked the century mark with a cool 98. Juniors DJ Lipke and Devin O'Brien rounded out the varsity Brick Squad. Overall, Hobart placed 6th out of 8 teams at the Invite.
Rain-outs forced cancellations on the other 2 matches scheduled last week, which means the Brickies will be busy PLAYING THROUGH in the next few weeks if the weather will cooperate.
If Hobart can continue improving as a team each time out, it'll be fun to see how far under 200 (per 9 holes as a team) these guys can shoot!
